Shawen Stories: January 2012
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Denied Holy Communion Because of That Something Extra -. I'm not sure how First Communion works in the Catholic church - and I'm sure it's different in the American version of the Catholic church than the British version. But, it would seem to me that a priest should reach out to a family with a child with Down syndrome - or any developmental disability - well before the child would normally receive their First Communion and discuss ways to prepare him for it. Shawen Stories: Admonished, Again
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2014/10/admonished-again.html
Wednesday, October 29, 2014. A couple of years ago, I wrote Stop Thief! When Shawen admonished me because he thought I was leaving a store without paying for the merchandise I was carrying out. (I had paid when he wasn't paying attention because he was too busy watching himself on the store's monitors.) He doesn't believe in stealing, unless, of course, it's him. Printer paper to write his lists (endless lists). Another story for another day. I killed that possum! I'm not hysterical, but I'm upset. When ...

Shawen Stories: Manners
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2014/10/manners.html
Monday, October 27, 2014. Shawen is often complimented because of his good manners. When he was younger, h. E reminded me of Eddie Haskell (If you don't understand that reference, google "Leave it to Beaver".), impeccable manners, but a little rotten when he has the opportunity. If you say "thank you', he will absolutely say "you're welcome". But here's the thing. If he says "thank you", you will say "you're welcome". It's required. If he says 'love ya' , "love you" doesn't work. But with a smile. Simple...

Shawen Stories: All Hallow's Eve
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2014/10/all-halloweds-eve.html
Friday, October 31, 2014. So it's the last night of the tenth month of the year, which means three things for us in 2014 - It's Halloween, tomorrow is our first 5K Zombie Run for Great Destinies and TLC, and it's the last day of Down Syndrome Awareness month 2014. It's the last day of blogging for me for awhile. Can't believe - it looks like I might actually do this! But he was ready for the next two groups - jumped out the door yelling Boo! Rolling Around In My Head. One Ride Two Perspectives. When we w...

Shawen Stories: October 2012
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 1, 2012. One 2012. 31 for 21. Lessons I've Learned. Oh - why am I thinking I will do this? Every year I say "next year I'll plan it out", but I don't. I mean - October comes right after September and September is one of the craziest months of the year. School is in full swing, work is busy, lots of things to do. But, here I go again. I have no theme. Given that I rarely blog anymore, I doubt I'll have many readers anyway, but here goes something . For two years we went through therapies a...

Shawen Stories: March 2011
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 14, 2011. Anyone who knows me knows that the word "lifeskills" does not make my heart sing, so you can imagine the thoughts that ran through my head when I sat in our preliminary meeting for Shawen's transition to high school and heard about such wonderful learning opportunities as teeth brushing and laundry skills in the self-contained class. I think you'd all be proud of my edit button, though. I managed to calmly say something like - I'm not so much into "lifeskills". We can work on that...

Shawen Stories: Art Class
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2014/10/art-class.html
Thursday, October 30, 2014. The general ed Art class has been a good high school experience for Shawen. He seems to really enjoy the class, and he brings home some nice work. The last project he did was this ceramic something or other. He brought it home today. I like it. I want it on a shelf in the family room. The colors are vibrant blues. The design is cool. The shape is funky. But, he won't give it to me. I asked. He said no . His explanation? It's not like it's Mother's day! Rolling Around In My Head.

Shawen Stories: Nicknames - Updated
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2014/10/nicknames.html
Tuesday, October 28, 2014. For awhile - seemed liked a long while - Shawen would tell the same jokes over and over and over and over again. So, one day, as he was telling the same jokes, Tony started jumping in with the punchline. After he did that a few times, Shawen, angrily, pronounced him "The Dreamcrusher". Tony wears the name with pride. There was another student in one of his classes Mrs. Demanding was in who he nicknamed "Mr. Lazy". Rolling Around In My Head. One Ride Two Perspectives. Simple tem...

Shawen Stories: March 2012
http://shawenstories.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Just a little weary . It's been an interesting few weeks. Interesting being code for confusing, aggravating, frustrating, complex, exciting. You get the idea. Can you see the story? The poor parents suing for the cost of redecorating the nursery, the cost of a wedding, the difference in clothing costs between a boy and a girl, and makeup and manicures. What have I missed? I have three boys, so I'm sure I'm leaving out something. I'm starting to believe I'm addicted to whatever ...
