Sipping Chai: Impressions of an American in Tbilisi
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012/05/impressions-of-american-in-tbilisi.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Impressions of an American in Tbilisi. But one should not complain, I suppose, at the chance to have two weeks! What Wikipedia doesn’t tell you is that they are good. They are not the healthiest things around, considering that some of them are “filled with cheese and topped with cheese” so I suppose we should be thankful to have such a grueling walk uphill to burn some of it off. Sipping Chai: Over the Pamirs to Murghab (and back)
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012/07/over-pamirs-to-murghab-and-back.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Saturday, July 21, 2012. Over the Pamirs to Murghab (and back). Cresting the top of the ridge and seeing the yurts and spectators spread out in the plain below, it became clear that the 10 hour drive over the Pamirs, the altitude sickness, the oppressive sun would all be worth it. I believed that it always would be – after all, how many people get to travel to Murghab. But now I knew it. I believe it is quite fitting. We came across Ch...

Sipping Chai: June 2012
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Sunday, June 24, 2012. From Georgian Towns to Tajikistan Horses. There has been, quite unfortunately, little to write about these past few weeks since returning from Georgia. Unless, that is, you’re interested in hearing about my subsistence on sausage and cheese while Maggie is in Burundi (among other places). Our final few days in Georgia was spent in the Svaneti region. With a recommendation like that, we couldn’t miss it. There is ...

Sipping Chai: Swimming at Bloody Lake
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012/07/swimming-at-bloody-lake.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Sunday, July 8, 2012. Swimming at Bloody Lake. When we first moved into this new apartment, we were regaled with tales of apricot and apple trees in the back yard. I had visions of us feasting on free fruit for the next few months and anxiously awaited the arrival of the fruit. Alas, it has come. The fruit is too high up in the trees and without a latter to reach it, I have little recourse but to sit and wait for it to fall. Beach time...

Sipping Chai: May 2012
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Thursday, May 31, 2012. Sounded as if he was chanting, though since it was undoubtedly in Georgian I suspect he was reciting portions of the Bible. Afterwards, people came in, kissed a cross he held in his hand, kissed the hem of his cloak and then he sprinkled (holy? It definitely did not disappoint – the food and wine was excellent. And because we were just about the one people there, there wasn’t much work for all th...What Wikipedi...

Sipping Chai: January 2011
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Saturday, January 29, 2011. Replace the old goat! Last night I was walking with a friend of mine – despite being 8pm, it is pitch dark and we were going to buy a rotisserie chicken that they sell here on the street. Regardless, chicken in bag, we were returning to her house to eat when I stepped right into an uncovered manhole. I tried to bounce up and dust off – “I’m ok! My friend: “Didn’t you see the hole? Me: “No…did you? Replace th...

Sipping Chai: Ramadan & pork, an unholy combination
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012/08/ramadan-pork-unholy-combination.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Sunday, August 5, 2012. Ramadan and pork, an unholy combination. Its currently Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting and its as noticeable as one might expect in a country so wedded to vodka and with a general disregard for strict Islamic principles. Nonetheless, a fair number of people here are fasting and some of the better lunch spots, much to my disappointment, are closed for the next few weeks. I cannot recall last year’s Ei...

Sipping Chai: January 2012
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Sunday, January 29, 2012. Flowers that spring from blood and other tales of Batken. One does not get to Batken Oblast often, but it seems to engender a bit of criminality in me when I do find myself in its welcoming bosom. I tried the jedi mind trick on the border guard:. Guard: Documents, please. Me: You don’t need to see my documents (Waving hand in front of guard’s face). Guard: You’re under arrest. Lets just say he knows what he did.

Sipping Chai: December 2011
http://sipping-chai.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Matt and Maggie's time in Central Asia sipping chai (aka tea). Enjoy! Monday, December 19, 2011. Stop me if you've heard this one: A menorah, a Christmas tree, a Bosnian Muslim and a sugar cookie walk into a bar…. And if that bar happens to be filled with hundreds of Santas in various states of intoxication, than that means you likely have found yourself at Santa Con Boston. Nobody can throw around such words as “Kringle Kaos” or “Santarchy” without getting my attention. Some people thought we must be of...
