The Three Year Plan. On Manipulation: Skillfully Managed. November 17, 2013. They define Manipulation as “skillful or artful management”. But we know, it is so much more than that. Manipulation, Emotional Abuse, Controlling Behavior: Played, Duped, Destroyed. There should be more words to describe what it is to be made the object of another person’s machinations. I needed a puzzle so he became deeply complex, a multilayered enigma. I needed to play the heroine, so he became a troubled soul in peril.

Occasionally, though, I find myself wondering if I’m alone not because I don’t feel capable of fully committing to another person, but because I’m safe being alone and I’m just not brave enough to be that vulnerable with someone else. The First of My Fairy Godmothers. In a department store formerly known as Kaufmann’s, I met my first fairy godmother. Instead of glass slippers, she gave me tan knee-high go-go boots. If I am to be more precise, she didn’t give me the boots but she affirmed my right to wear them, which is far more important anyway. I pretended to be browsing while my dad rummaged through stacked boxes. From a few display tables away, I saw him lift an enormous box and shout, What about these? They’re fun and only 12 bucks.
