Finally! North to Alaska (Part 1 of 2) | Life With No Fixed Address

Life With No Fixed Address. Two People … Eighteen Wheels … Seven Continents. North to Alaska (Part 1 of 2). May 4, 2016. May 4, 2016. Latitude 63.3367 N. To a truck driver, the Haul Road to the Arctic Ocean is North America’s final frontier. But since I’m a not-really-trucking kind of truck driver, crossing the Yukon into Alaska is mine. The best office window in the world is in my tractor. We spent the night in a pullout and woke up to this scene — Matanuska Glacier. Built in eight months during the Sec...

Life With No Fixed Address. Two People … Eighteen Wheels … Seven Continents. Exploring Texas Hill Country. March 3, 2016. March 6, 2016. Mostly empty as far as the eye can see, driving across Texas is an intense experience. Desolate and monochromatic, the vast emptiness is dotted by millions of grazing cattle, thousands of genuflecting oil derricks, wild boar hurtling across the Interstate ,. Click map to enlarge. Once upon a time, a cotton gin was the center of life in Gruene. Today, in summer, Gruene i...

Life With No Fixed Address. Two People … Eighteen Wheels … Seven Continents. Art is in the Eye of the Steering Wheel Holder. December 1, 2015. December 2, 2015. Even a casual reader of this blog understands that MacGyver, responsible for all of our photographs, is an artist. He sees beauty and complexity in frost on windshields and lighting fixtures in restaurants, as well as paint on canvas. He has exposed me to a lot of art in the past 25 years. On the east side of I-5 in Northern California, about mil...

Life With No Fixed Address. Two People … Eighteen Wheels … Seven Continents. Good Karma… Bad Karma. February 18, 2017. Colombo, Sri Lanka. Instantly we thought: scam. Thirtyish man, well-dressed in western-style clothing — dark sunglasses, black skinny pants, pink, long-sleeved collared shirt, and loafers with a hip skinny square toe — approaches us as we’re walking through the business district towards the waterfront and the Galle Face Hotel. Ice-cold drinks on our minds. He’s chatty. Where you from?

TruckinEd: October 2015

http://truckined.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The turbo on our engine started leaking oil into the air filter. As the turbo started leaking, the ECM computer on the engine was displaying codes on the dash in the cab that referred to the turbo. Each time the engine was revved to 1400 and above RPMs, the oil seal in the turbo would fail allowing oil to seep into the air filter. Since I turned the turbo in as a core, it will be rebuilt and live again! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). All CDL holders need to join:. Air Dog II Fuel...

TruckinEd: Still Here

http://truckined.blogspot.com/2016/06/still-here.html

Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Well our clutch finally gave out after 830,000 miles. It was the original clutch. Interesting thing is that there was another truck exactly like ours and made at the same time. This truck that I'm referring to had a clutch installed from the factory which failed before 100 miles. Ours lasted to 830,000 miles. I was going for 1 million, but 830,000 is good enough. We are still using the original EGR cooler and EGR valve. I wonder how long they will go. Still aiming for a million.

Road, mountain, whatever. A missing man in the FRF peloton. The FRF peloton is diminished by one rider. A ripple of shock rippled through our small group of riders late last week as word spread that John had suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, passed away. John, second from the right, was an enthusiastic rouleur in the FRF peloton, astride his beloved steel bike with old-school toe clips and leather straps. Sadly, he passed away last week, quite unexpectedly. John was retro, but he was anything but a grouch.

Road, mountain, whatever. I lead a not-so-secret double life. For 23 years I’ve played out my hockey dreams every Sunday morning, from early October through to early May or late April. On the road, not the ice. It’s an adult continuation of the game I played on the street as a kid. Same hodgepodge of ratty equipment, same plastic orange ball from Canadian Tire that stings like the dickens when it gets cold. So Sunday afternoons are usually spent relaxing, or enjoying some family time. Slow cooker, where ...

Road, mountain, whatever. What I did on summer vacation. Ride, of course. I need a vacation. From my vacation. As has become something of a Big Ring tradition for more than a decade, I book off for the last two weeks of Le Tour de France. Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds that allow me to actually attend Le Tour de France every year. So I get up early to watch the live TV coverage, then head out for a ride that pales in comparison to what the pros achieve on a daily basis. And, of course, there were ...

Enjoying the view from Dad World |

https://thebigring.wordpress.com/2015/06/21/enjoying-the-view-from-dad-world

Road, mountain, whatever. Enjoying the view from Dad World. Being a dad was never one of the overriding goals of my life. For most of my adult life, fatherhood wasn’t even on my radar. I hadn’t met the right partner. I had plenty of other interests and activities to occupy my time and attention. I was scared. Then along came Princess of Pavement. And she thought it would be cool to have a kid. Admittedly I got into the game pretty late. The patterns and rhythms of my life were well-entrenched. I have no ...

Road, mountain, whatever. Bikeman: The unexpected virtues of cycling. Cycling comes with surprises. A new discovery on a familiar route. A lousy weather forecast that turns into sunshine. A sunny day that turns into a cloud burst. New vigour from leaden legs. Or vigorous legs that turn leaden. Friday’s ride surprised in many ways. With a busy schedule of things to do and places to go, the ride itself was a surprise, made possible by an unexpected bonus morning of daycare for Little Ring. Even on Wednesda...

Road, mountain, whatever. Adventures in TV viewing. Hello, it must be Tuesday. Or maybe it’s Wednesday? If you’re setting your clock by the cycling coverage on Sportsnet, it’s easy to get confused. The European cycling season has started in earnest. For the past few years we’ve actually been able to watch many of the races on TV. Sportsnet’s on-air guide says it’s showing Tirreno-Adriatico, but instead I’m watching cricket highlights. It’s a bit of a gong show. And thoroughly frustrating. For too long cy...

Road, mountain, whatever. There’s a new bridge in town. Actually, the new Port Mann Bridge has been open to traffic for a few years now. The billion-dollar behemoth spans the Fraser River, linking the eastern suburbs to Vancouver and its immediate neighbours. For a time it was the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, comprised of 10 lanes for highway traffic, and one for pedestrians and cyclists. Well, it took them a while to finish the latter. So far, the entrance to the bridge is still a bit of a m...

Life With No Borders. Why You Should Study Zen Buddhism (without necessarily becoming a buddhist). I can already hear everyone's responses to the title as I'm writing this:. Okay, maybe that is slightly exaggerated, but anybody that sticks around long enough to read this will realize that is not. Now I have a photo gallery. Available to registered users.
