Skip to main content. Light Rail Project Timeline. Construction will continue through the spring of 2017. During that time, trains will begin running but will not be open to passenger service. Passenger service is expected by March 2018. Light rail service to Mecklenburg County began in November 2007, when the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) opened the LYNX Blue Line from I-485 at South Boulevard (Pineville city limits) to Seventh Street in Uptown Charlotte. The following information will tell you how to stay safe on and around the streetcar and light rail systems. Obey all traffic signals and signs. They are there for your safety, not as an inconvenience. Cross only at designated crosswalks. There are clearly marked signs showing you safe areas to cross the street. Always hold your child's hand when waiting for the streetcar or light rail.
