Monday, August 13, 2012. Victims of an Ancient Spell. The question normally thrown at me is “Why do you pronounce it that way? 8221; When what should be asked is, “what’s with the weird spelling? 8221; I refer, of course, to the element with the atomic number of 13—Alumin(i)um. Davy was quite the element celebrity of the time having previously isolated the elements potassium, sodium, calcium, strontium, barium, and magnesium. Webster dictionaries in the U.S. actually listed the –ium spellin...However, in...

Friday, August 27, 2010. What's that in old money? Recently I was reminded of my inevitable aging in a new way. Commentary on getting old is not an original topic. Birthday cards joking about age abound, grey hairs arrive, and I swore I’d never grow too old for pop music but by the curly left horn of the great Jipply Gargler what the blazes is that ear crud the kids listening to these days? But on the top row were coins that had no right being there. For example there were five pence pieces exactly l...

the Hubb hub: March 2008
http://thehubbhub.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 22, 2008. Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away in January of 2008. Many personal stories have been recorded to honor his memory. This is one of mine, and it’s all true. President Hinckley would have only one 90th birthday and only one 90th birthday celebration. If you were a student reporter assigned to cover the event, you would either be there, or write the “lost and found pets” column for the rest of the term. In his jeans and bo...

Sunday, August 17, 2008. Mother said not to medal. So it’s Olympic season, bringing with it the usual wow moments of amazing feats, the tut-tutting over bad calls by the officials, the antics of ruffled athletes, and a staggering amount of indifference on my part. I am not a sports fan. I’m not against them mind, I just don’t have a personal need to know what’s going on sportswise. I present to you the medal results as reported by American network NBC on Sunday, August 17 at 3:30 pm. I’m not the fi...

Friday, May 23, 2008. There were 120 e-mails waiting for me when I got to work this morning. Some of these messages are so important I received literally dozens of duplicates. Many people would callously delete them without so much as glancing at their content but that’s just plain rude. If someone’s taken the time to compose a message for me I give it the respect it deserves. 8220;Your degree is just a phone call away! Next is a mail from Shirley (Hi Shirley! Okay I’m back, and while I was gone an...

Friday, March 9, 2012. I’m talking to you early risers. Yes you—the ones who are able to be in deep sleep at 5:30 am and at 5:31 am are completely awake, alert and—dare I say? This is not my choice; it’s just how it is. I’m far from unique in how my body wakes but somehow the early risers have the entire working western world convinced that their way of operating is the only right way and everything else is unnatural. And the world accepts it as their right to do this. Mid-morning, slow-to-start rise...

the Hubb hub: Dear Network News
http://thehubbhub.blogspot.com/2007/07/dear-network-news.html
Tuesday, July 10, 2007. I am writing to congratulate you on your fine infotainment. Things I don’t know about can’t affect me and no one understands this better than you. While newspapers still cover events in-depth, creating the fear that goes with knowledge, your broadcasts give little enough detail (and sometimes none at all) that I can live carefree and rest easy. You provide a great service in helping me think that I am informed. Well done network news! Labels: columns and comment. I am writing to c...

the Hubb hub: July 2008
http://thehubbhub.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, July 30, 2008. When I was a kid I was amazed and astounded at San Franciscans. How smart was it to live in a city between major fault lines and where there is a 63 percent chance of a major quake in the next 30 years? Now I'm older, I choose to live in Los Angeles, which has a 67 percent chance of the same. Yes, I amaze and astound myself. Yesterday was my most prolific earthquake experience so far. For those that have a few minutes here’s my account of those few seconds. Big trucks shake vibr...
