Archery Elk - The Second Stage. After a br ief return to home base to retool and repack, Mrs. M. and I headed out for our final trip for this years Archery Elk season. The first hunt took place in the Bl ue Mountains. For this effort, we traveled further east to the back side of the Eagle Cap in the Wallowa Mountains. Prior to arriving at camp, we spent a couple days fishing the Grande Ronde River outside of Minam. On the way out of a ravine near dark, I came across a Forest Service survey marker. Th...

This year, my elk hunting partners and I drew controlled archery elk tags for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, near The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The last time I hunted that country was in 2012 and a huge forest fire was burning a few miles away. Opening day was more like a war zone than a forest. The sun and trapping the heat. Then the wind changed. Thanks to the restorative powers of Mother Nature, the view from Buckhorn is again stunning . N. Oh Yeah, The Elk Scout. The Rose City Read...

Practice, Practice, Practice. Opening Day for the 2015 Archery Elk Hunting Season is just a few weeks away and our hunting partners have ramped up the practice schedule. Instead of shooting at bullseye targets, we meet for friendly competition at the Darts room of Broken Arrow Archery to shoot at inter-active videos of our intended prey. Shooting the Dart's system is a great way to practice for the hunt. While not the real thing, it does put a fair amount of pressure on the shooter and hones the shoo...

It's All About The Dogs. The end of the Pheasant season last year really deserves a mention, even though it came to a close several months ago. It was a crisp December day with little wind and a blue sky only the winter cold can deliver. As usual, the ranch family gathered to celebrate a very good season with one last push through the corn fields and across the sections of CRP and hay. Once the hunt got underway, the labs, shorthairs and wirehairs settled into the rhythm of the day. Help get The Grow.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play. The eveni ng sweet light glows under the gathering thunder heads as the day ends across the high des ert. The air is thick and tastes like dried sage. The ground is brittle, each step crushing. In the ravines, antelope gather, coming to bed down from green hay fields where they fed through the day. At o'dark thirty, they'll sleep on a ridge top, one lone sentry. An On the Road Coincidence. Long time hunting and fishing partner Russ Roberts occupies his working days d...

On the Trap Line. Northern Minnesota. Flat, like a pool table, not a hill in sight. Six miles from the Canadian border on the edge of The Lake of the Woods, the ghosts of homesteads past greet a -13˚ morning. Gravel and paved roads cut through the landscape in square mile plots of CRP, forest and cultivated ground. The beginning of bitter cold and a long, dark winter. Trapping season. LaRae resets a leg hold trap by first, cleaning the ice off the jaws. She then cushions the plate and plants the trap...
