Concepticon: A Resource for the Linking of Concept Lists. The Concepticon (common work with Michael Cysouw and Robert Forkel) is a resource that links more than 50 different concept lists (often also called "Swadesh lists") which have been proposed in the literature. With help of this resource, one can, among others, easily compare which authors would qualify which concepts as belonging to the realm of basic vocabulary, and which not. Visit the official website at http:/ concepticon.clld.org.

Use the term "systematic correspondences" for "regular sound correspondences" further underlines this (so the idea is not new in linguistics but has been around for some time). I discuss this in more detail in a recent blog post I wrote for David Morrison's blog The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks. Which you can find here. Inheritance and Cultural Evolution. Blogpost on Interdisciplinary Research. New Paper on Etymological Word Relations. Last updated on 2016-10-25 20:41:28.158469.

The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: Stick Science Contest
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2013/04/stick-science-contest.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Monday, April 8, 2013. In 2009 and 2010 a group named the Florida Citizens for Science. Ran what they called a Stick Science Contest, in which the participants contributed stick cartoons that could "be used to educate the general public and especially decision makers about the truth behind one false science argument." In practice, many (but not all) of the contributions concerned mis-interpretations about evolution.
The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: Network analysis of scotch whiskies
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2012/05/network-analysis-of-scotch-whiskies.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Sunday, May 6, 2012. Network analysis of scotch whiskies. When using non-scientific data to illustrate mathematical methods, I am told that the most common sources are baseball averages, movie grosses and political polls. I do not wish to resort to such clichéd examples, at least not yet. So, I am going to continue my series (which started with the Eurovision Song Contest. I have re-analyzed these data using a weighted b...
The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: The decline of marriages in the USA
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-decline-of-marriages-in-usa.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Monday, August 10, 2015. The decline of marriages in the USA. The United States government likes to keep an eye on its populace, as we all know, and they keep track of numbers, as well as people. Sometimes, they release these numbers, so that we can have a look at them. The National Center for Health Statistics. One such dataset that might be of interest is that on Marriages and Divorces. The states are neatly arranged i...

The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: Charles Darwin's unpublished tree sketches
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2012/06/charles-darwins-unpublished-tree.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Saturday, June 16, 2012. Charles Darwin's unpublished tree sketches. It therefore perhaps comes as something of a surprise that Darwin never published an empirical phylogenetic tree. His only published diagram (in The Origin of Species. Nevertheless, trees appear as sketches in Darwin's notebooks, note portfolios and book drafts, both before and after The Origin. Dated 1837-1838). They are not actually trees, but ins...

The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: The complexity of lexical change
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-complexity-of-lexical-change.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. The complexity of lexical change. Most computational approaches to historical linguistics, be it those producing networks or those producing trees, make use of lexical data. What Makes a Word? In a very simple language model, the lexicon of a language can be seen as a bag of words. A word, furthermore, is traditionally defined by two aspects: its form. Thus, the French word arbre. Are quite fr...

The Genealogical World of Phylogenetic Networks: First millennium problem has been solved: tree containment is easy on stable networks
http://phylonetworks.blogspot.com/2015/08/first-millennium-problem-has-been.html
Biology, anthropology, computational science, and networks in phylogenetic analysis. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. First millennium problem has been solved: tree containment is easy on stable networks. One of the most fundamental computational problems related to phylogenetic networks is the following Tree Containment. Problem. Given a phylogenetic network and a phylogenetic tree, does the network display. Basically meaning that the tree can be obtained from the network by deleting nodes and branches.).
