Literacy, life, and laughter: February 2014

http://literacylifeandlaughter.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Literacy, life, and laughter. Conversations about literacy, power, and working to change the world. Monday, February 17, 2014. I had my interview with a local newsperson today, Rachel Barnhart. I have to admit that I was totally nervous. I tried so hard to not be too serious, even though the topic is serious. Not sure I achieved that at all. I've watched the video. Friday, February 14, 2014. My university put out a press release. The main thing is to start some kind of movement to start over in schools&#...

Literacy, life, and laughter. Conversations about literacy, power, and working to change the world. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. I am on sabbatical next year and can't wait to get started. A whole year to focus on just one full time job - our work at East High school. Some things are just plain shocking. What is considered "normal" in urban schools is just never even possible in most suburban settings. Do we have a parent handbook? No Do kids know their schedules before the first day? No How have we gotten t...

Literacy, life, and laughter. Conversations about literacy, power, and working to change the world. Friday, May 3, 2013. Literacies at the Market project. I've been working on a participatory action research project at a local "corner store" transformation project and we've come up with the following local definition of literacies (rooted in a literacy as social practice perspective):. What do you think? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The pilgrimage: to Gram, at last. Mimi Ito - Weblog. What Kids Can Do.

Literacy, life, and laughter: So much has happened!

http://literacylifeandlaughter.blogspot.com/2014/05/so-much-has-happened.html

Literacy, life, and laughter. Conversations about literacy, power, and working to change the world. Sunday, May 18, 2014. So much has happened! I can't believe how much has happened since I last posted. I'm not sure where to start. " Radical equality. Has done well since it came out. Not only was I on the local news as I discussed in my last post, but I was also interviewed by Justin Murphy at our local newspaper, the Democrat and Chronicle. He did a nice piece on the book. Still, it was fun. At a public...

Literacy, life, and laughter: December 2013

http://literacylifeandlaughter.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Literacy, life, and laughter. Conversations about literacy, power, and working to change the world. Sunday, December 8, 2013. Just finished attending the Literacy Research Association. Conference, and while I'm totally disappointed to be stranded in Dallas due to an ice storm, I was nicely impressed with the conference. I learned a ton and saw some good friends. Of particular note was the final plenary with Carol Lee. Here's a Foucault quote I love that I used to close my discussant comments on a session:.

Digital Beginnings: August 2008

http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, 31 August 2008. The trend for targeting parents alongside children continues, with Disney's launch of a social networking site for parents - ' Disney Family Community. What better way to tie the whole family into Disney products? There is also a parents' site on Yahoo! What a shame, then, that it plays into the deficit discourses around media, stating:. Posted by Jackie Marsh. Thursday, 21 August 2008. As a Radiohead fan, I like to hear about the band's engagement with all things digital, such as...

Digital Beginnings: April 2009

http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 29 April 2009. Well I said I wasn't interested in using Twitter but then I saw Martin Waller's Year 2 class tweets. And changed my mind. Of course Martin is ahead of the proposed curriculum changes. In England and will therefore be a beacon of good practice when other primary schools start to tweet. My tweets are here. But as you can see I am only just getting the hang of it and the children in Martin's class are much more accomplished tweeters! Posted by Jackie Marsh. Friday, 24 April 2009.

Digital Beginnings: March 2009

http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, 29 March 2009. Attended the Virtual World Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) conference. I am still a relative newbie when it comes to presenting in SL so thank goodness that the cool and collected (and impeccably dressed) Sheila Yoshikawa. Was the chair for my session. In the meantime, back to the online MA New Literacies. More virtual learning, but with a lower 'emotional bandwith' than you get with the use of avatars (something I learned at VWBPE! Saturday, 29 November 2008. Thanks to Joanne Larson. For the link to this overview of the most amazing interactive interface, g-speak. I can't wait until that technology becomes affordable for schools! The podcasts have been recorded for RezEd, a community of educationalists interested in virtual worlds. Check out their site. Lots of interesting stuff on it. Posted by Jackie Marsh. Wednesday, 26 November 2008. A world of language. My four year-old-nephew asked me, "What's the world called today? It makes...

Digital Beginnings: May 2009

http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 27 May 2009. I have been enjoying using Twitter, but am anxious that it is taking time away from blogging. Just as I was thinking this, Joanne posted on her blog. On this very topic! So I am not alone. I have decided to try and follow Guy's. Suggests. These intertextual practices can only lead to more daft 'twittery' names, so how about 'Twogging', or 'Blittering'? Sorry, it must be this playground rhymes project I am involved in.). Posted by Jackie Marsh. Wednesday, 20 May 2009. I don't think...

Tag line 'join the revolution') is aimed at girls and is certainly less saccharine than some sites that have been developed. However, if you had any doubt about the demographic profile of its key users, then you just have to look at the videos here. Thursday, 25 September 2008. I am in Dublin for the Reading Association Ireland Conference - and although it is a short visit, as I have to return to teach on our MA Early Childhood Education. I have already learned so much about the current use of technologies in the Irish literacy curriculum. Teachers I have spoken to are looking forward to acquiring interactive whiteboards in the years ahead, as they are not yet widespread, and so I recommend reading this report. Posted by Jackie Marsh. Digital Beginnings: July 2009

http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, 12 July 2009. Just returned from the UKLA conference at Greenwich, which was excellent. Many highlights, including Lynda Graham’s symposium with Martin Waller and Angela Colvert sharing their excellent classroom practice in relation to digital literacies, and Angela Thomas’s. And just when I thought the weekend couldn't get better, I wandered into Greenwich market and found these gorgeous handmade handbags. So all in all, a very successful conference. http://digitalbeginnings.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Monday, 31 August 2009. Bye, bye blog (for now). This is a sad post for me, but I have decided to suspend my blogging activity for now. That is because I am to take on the role of Head of School of Education tomorrow for three years and whilst I consider myself to be quite good at multi-tasking, I am not that. Good If I get time to do any online social networking at all in the near future, I intend to focus my attention on the School of Education Twitter stream ( here. Posted by Jackie Marsh. Monday, 20 October 2008. Haven't had time to blog recently as have been teaching on weekend schools throughout October. (And here. Is the link to the paper for students on the EdD. Early childhood route.) So this is a quick post to signal some recent useful digital-related stuff on the web which has made me feel quite optimistic about change - for today at least! First, David Puttnam's talk. And found a number of interesting reports on their website, including The Power of Pow! For those of us who have b...
