Little Home In The Country

7 years ago, our family of 7 moved to a small home on the prairie. Our goals were lofty - to live frugally, become more self reliant, grow as much of our food as we could (sourcing the rest locally), and in general, learn to live in a more sustainable way. In an exciting twist of life events, we recently moved "home" to the coast and are adapting our lives and goals to a completely different climate and landscape. Join us as we continue on our journey!

Little Home In The Country: February 2014

http://littlehomeinthecountry.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Little Home In The Country. Tuesday, 25 February 2014. The Hoover Dam is a spectacular piece of engineering but I was extremely distracted by the low water level. Although it's hard to tell in the pictures, if you look closely, you'll see the horizontal demarkation (where light and dark meet) on the far rock face. That line marks where the water level SHOULD be. Apparently, the water level has never been so low which has everybody quite concerned (and rightly so). Little Home In The Country. It's a brill...

Little Home In The Country: April 2014

http://littlehomeinthecountry.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Little Home In The Country. Wednesday, 23 April 2014. I was given a bag of soap nuts a few months back and because I had a good stash of laundry soap on hand, I didn't try them right away. I've been cleaning out cupboards and closets like crazy over the past few weeks and found these little nuggets languishing at the back of the laundry shelf. Time to use them! Definitely not for hand or dish soap, but great for laundry! The soap nut liquid was surprisingly very drying to my skin, so that meant it was not.

Little Home In The Country: July 2014

http://littlehomeinthecountry.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Little Home In The Country. Wednesday, 30 July 2014. Beets, Brassicas and Bees are taking up plenty of time lately. Blanching, freezing, storing, dehydrating. busy as a bee am I! We also have a garden full of native plants nearby which I'm seeing that bees prefer to cultivated plants. Between both large gardens and the nearby naturalized areas, there appears to be adequate forage. Back to the blanching pot. Little Home In The Country. Wednesday, 23 July 2014. I hate using plastic, but as we are down to o...

Who posted about this very issue just yesterday) and a nod to Cindy and John Schneider of Gold Forest Grains. Little Home In The Country: It's Brown Season

http://littlehomeinthecountry.blogspot.com/2015/04/its-brown-season.html

Little Home In The Country. Saturday, 11 April 2015. Urgh, after a lovely holiday on the west coast where the grass is green and the flowers are blooming, we returned home to see the usual early Spring display of (depressing) brown. The vacation was great! I especially enjoyed haunting a few (very quaint) used book stores in Sidney and bought a beekeeping book for me and a book gift for a friend (I shall not divulge more in case my friend is reading here) XO. Little Home In The Country. Such a beautiful ...

Gardening with Jess: March 2015

http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Sunday, March 29, 2015. Wine, onions and a bird's nest. Well, between cycling and shovelling, March got away on us! We start a Merlot-Cab-Shiraz wine a few weeks back and it is now racked off for the secondary ferment. Jess was quite excited to stir in the oak chips. I had initially thought they were a nodding onion but the seed head (which comes in full and purple) is wrong. Maybe they are a Geyer's onion? Sunday, March 8, 2015. While there is still 18 inc...

Building a family home on the prairies. Friday, 29 April 2016. Weekly Column: Save the Environment, Save Money, too! Then why not make the same effort to trim your budget? Have you considered how much money you spend on things that you use once and throw away? Is there an alternative to this wasteful practice? For instance, have you got worn out t-shirts or towels that can be made into rags and reused rather than buying disposable wipes? To take advantage of the heat. Get in the Habit. Because we don't e...

Gardening with Jess: The bees!

http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-bees.html

Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Friday, August 14, 2015. I've got some sort of bee obsession going this year. Maybe it is that I have my camera/phone on me all the time and simply catch more shots of bees? The fellow above was struggling to get airborne off the dirt. So I picked some yarrow and enticed him (her? Onto it them held it up in the wind And off he flew, letter me get a nice shot of him launching. This was a huge bee- easily the side of the first phalange of my thumb. Bob Barnet...

http://greenmeupgranny.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 18, 2013. Friday, April 12, 2013. I have been neglecting my blog lately and I am sorry for that. Presently my full time work has been quite stressful but hopefully at the end of the week when I lose a chunk of it I will be able to get back on top of things that I truly enjoy. With this in mind this was the reason for the camping trip. Camp all set up now to sit back and relax. The scenery was magical. Beautiful little creek nearby. Quaint little bush cafe just up the road. Apakah Bisnis O...

SouthEast of 33: Weekly Column: Enjoy a Christmas Potluck

http://southeastof33.blogspot.com/2017/01/weekly-column-enjoy-christmas-potluck.html

Building a family home on the prairies. Monday, 2 January 2017. Weekly Column: Enjoy a Christmas Potluck. I am so over Christmas that I actually hate to post yet another Christmas-related column. However, thinking of the cost of food is something that we should be doing year round. I hope 2017 is off to a great start! Enjoy a Christmas potluck. Ah, the season of over-indulgence! Perhaps you can still host or attend these events but, by adjusting your expectations, make them more affordable for all involv...

http://youngernews.blogspot.com/2012/05/reflections-on-motherhood.html

Rachael's ponderings and ramblings about life, teaching, gardening, knitting, home keeping and the various other topics and hobbies that prompt her interest. Sunday, May 13, 2012. Since its Mother's Day, I figure its a most appropriate day for this post. Its been brewing in my mind for several days, so here's to hoping to pans out to be all that I hope for it to be! When Peanut was little-bitty, I had a bit more time to do these things. Now, I don't! This is fairly normal Mommy time struggles, and I figu...

Little Home in the City

Little Home in the City. Monday, April 15, 2013. My grandfather passed away in January, just two weeks before I gave birth to our sweet daughter Aivenne. I still ache when I think how he just missed getting to hold her but I am continually comforted at the joyful thought of her running into his embrace in Heaven. This last week I was given (among other things I treasure) a little devotional book of his entitled He Leadeth Me. No, not always. Sometimes He who knoweth best. Where heavy shadows be;. Why in ...

Little Home In The Country

Little Home In The Country. Thursday, 20 October 2016. Needing to purchase a few things for the house (since moving in) instigated a bit of research on where to source what we need without:. A) breaking the budget. B) compromising values re: purchasing natural fibres/recycled material whenever possible. C) supporting local businesses/people. Three days ago, I purchased this NEW 100% wool 8'x10' area rug (still in the original manufacturer's wrapping) for $75.00. The original sticker price from th...Yeste...

Little Home in the Woods

Little Home in the Woods. Tuesday, March 26, 2013. DIY menu board, labels, and a new stove! This is one of those fun and easy projects, that really is useful! I found a frame at a thrift shop, backed it with scrapbook supplies, and added clothes pins, and a little paper covered box. I laminated our basic meals so we can clip them on the desired day. The clothes pins are painted lightly, I also added a sticker to represent each day. I like this because even my younger kids can help plan meals. Brady's did...
