George Washington prepared this manuscript map. Of his farm adjacent to the Mount Vernon estate in 1766. Known as River Farm, it was one of five tracts that made up the eight thousand acres he owned in the vicinity of Little Hunting Creek, less than ten miles south of Alexandria, Virginia. The map is also one of the few examples of American colonial plantation or "estate" maps in the Library of Congress's collections. G3882M7 1766 .W3 Vault Washington, George, 1732-1799.

Although water quality has increased to the point where swimming is considered non-hazardous, the bottom in most sections is mud and clay silt into which a wader will sink fast, and possibly deep. Swimming near the stone bridge really is dangerous, because there is a sharp drop off in depth that creates a circular current in which a swimmer can be caught.

Development has filled-in much of the creek. When you look at the map linked to the colonial history part of the site, you will see a Little Hunting Creek whose mouth is over 200 feet wide! The rate of fill is such that, since the channel was dredged in the 60s to 15 feet to Wessynton, it has now all but filled again, requiring renewed dredging. Wessynton dredged its two canals several years ago at a price exceeding $100,000. Almost all of the banks of the creek are privately owned.

Fishing on Little Hunting Creek

Little Hunting Creek is about 6 feet deep in most of the channel at high tide and about 10 feet at the moth of the creek. The mouth of the creek is very dangerous and has been posted to ban wading or swimming in that area, but many people fish there under the bridge on parkland maintained by the National Park Service. Recreational fishing on Little Hunting Creek is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, ( see the Virginia Regulations. And on the Potomac by the State of Maryland.
