Emergence: January 2010

http://littlelightshining.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 31 January 2010. Thinking out loud and Shifting perspective. Life is about constantly needing to shift perspective. That's how we change and grow. This can involve a mental. For example, changing an opinion, or discovering something new, which , as a matter of course, changes the way we "see" something. Or. it can be literal. For example, turning an object around, or standing on one's head. Thus, we understand the thing from a different angle, or, we "see" it in a totally new light. Shifting pers...

Emergence: November 2009

Sunday, 29 November 2009. Making natural dyes from rainforest resources is not as easy as one might first imagine, or as the media would have you believe, because there just aren't brilliant, jewel-like colors shining from every corner of the jungle! Yes, they exist, but their occurrence is infrequent, and when they happen, they're often hard to find/see/access. Finding what. Makes a good dye, and how. Right now, however, my best success seems to be coming from the kitchen, not the forest! Blue pigments ...

Emergence: Little time, little cloth

http://littlelightshining.blogspot.com/2010/12/little-time-little-cloth.html

Sunday, 5 December 2010. Little time, little cloth. I have so little time these days, I'm finding it hard to settle into something that I really want to work on. I also forgot to bring the iron again! It has to be little. So I have the sense of possibley finishing something. For me that's become important somehow. I found these scraps, which looked pretty nice together. Many are just thin strips an inch or so wide. What to do with them? Not to copy. but to learn more about technique. Lots of raw edges.

Emergence: November 2010

http://littlelightshining.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 November 2010. Well, I can't think of a better name for it! It's what you do when you just pick up the cloth and thread and without really knowing where it's going, you start something. It's what you do when you forget the iron and your sketchbook! Calico and two strands of DMC embroidery thread. A design outline sketched in graphite and then stitched using blanket/buttonhole stitch. Reverse applique using a scrap of hand-dyed, upcycled silk, in a slightly darker tone as the under layer. And i...

Design concept. © Catherine V. Bainbridge 2013. One of the things that I have always loved about hand-worked repeat patterns, is the way in which the natural irregularities - the imperfections - make a repeat pattern not a repeat pattern anymore. Even though it still is. And I think that's the quality that appeals so much to me in so many world cloth/stitch traditions. Design concept. © Catherine V. Bainbridge 2013. [re]emergence: Rice Moon

http://iy-am.blogspot.com/2013/01/rice-moon.html

Tuesday night the tide was low at 6 o'clock. Flashlights in hand, we stumbled out across the rocks. There were lobsters. Brittle starfish. And we saw the head of an eel poking out from a crevice under a rock, opening and closing its mouth, with small, needle-sharp teeth. I got a creepy feeling. Of wading in the warm waters in the dark. We went back to the shore and sat for an hour, sky-gazing. A fabulous comet - or suchlike - flashed across the heavens, with a streaming orange tail. I will soon be 42.

Walking in the rock pools with Nilo. Some are like clay. And some covered with all kinds of life. I have no idea what this strange creature might be, but surely it's a relative of the Trilobite? About 3 inches long. and yes, alive! I'm tired of only having the camera on my phone. I'm tired. Full stop. Catherine V. Bainbridge. Links to this post. Flame flowers of "Malinche" ( Delonix regia). And with cashew nut pods ( Anacardium occidentale. Catherine V. Bainbridge. Links to this post. Following on from yesterday's post. I uncovered a secret. The way that the shadows move around in my house. Origins. A screen window, with a wooden lattice. Sometimes the shadows and sunlight match to enhance the checkerboard, and sometimes they don't. Diamond becoming elipse. Square becoming circle. The faux-lace cuff of a blouse. This last image is for Neki.
