The Red Kayak: November 2007
http://littleredkayak.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Join me in the Red Kayak as we venture out on marshes, lakes and rivers in Louisa County, Iowa. Sunday, November 4, 2007. So, what did I do on what could be the last nice day of fall? Wrong, I didn't get out on the water though I should have because I am a wimp. Combining cold, wind and water just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'm just not that into it yet. Maybe in the spring I'll b. E more willing to brave the cold after months away from my little red kayak. Maybe. One of my favorite things about this tr...
The Red Kayak: Gators!
http://littleredkayak.blogspot.com/2009/04/gators.html
Join me in the Red Kayak as we venture out on marshes, lakes and rivers in Louisa County, Iowa. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Yes, I saw gators while I was paddling. No, I wasn't in my usual haunts around Louisa County, Iowa. A vacation with my sisters took me to Charleston, South Carolina a couple of weeks ago and I was able to convince the brave one to come a day early to paddle with me. After some rigorous research (I Googled "kayak charleston"), we found a fantastic guide. Ralph Earhart. PS I have to co...
The Red Kayak: AmeriCorps paddling partners

Join me in the Red Kayak as we venture out on marshes, lakes and rivers in Louisa County, Iowa. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. I had so much fun last night at Indian Slough that I had to get out again, even though I have a million things I should be doing. And what I really wanted to do was share the fun with someone else. It didn't take any convincing to get Lauren and Katie (a couple of the AmeriCorps*NCCC "kids" who are working in Louisa County this spring) to join me. Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge.
The Red Kayak: First Trip of the Year
http://littleredkayak.blogspot.com/2009/04/first-trip-of-year.html
Join me in the Red Kayak as we venture out on marshes, lakes and rivers in Louisa County, Iowa. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. First Trip of the Year. Though spring isn't officially here, the very spring-like weather lured me out for a quick trip to Indian Slough Wildlife Area. You'd think the picture was from the end of my trip but it was taken as I launched. I admit it wasn't as dark as this picture makes it look but there wasn't much light when I pulled out of the water. Labels: Indian Slough Wildlife Area.
The Red Kayak: July 2008
http://littleredkayak.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Join me in the Red Kayak as we venture out on marshes, lakes and rivers in Louisa County, Iowa. Thursday, July 10, 2008. I just reread the last blog from the beginning of May. There's been a lot more water since then and, ironically, I've had no desire to get out the kayak. We'll recover and things will eventually return to normal, even for those hit hardest. Helping with that effort are hundreds of volunteers from all across the country who have come to this place I'm sure they'd never heard of befo...

Wapello Warbler's Louisa County. Life 25 miles from the nearest stoplight. What Is an Atlatl? How Is It Used? October 28, 2010. Posted by Wapello Warbler in History. At first glance, the picture above may look like a simple stick, but it is actually an atlatl (pronounced AT-l-at-l). You throw the spear as you would without the atlatl except that, as your arm comes over your shoulder, you take your finger off the spear and snap your wrist. Finish with your hand pointing at the target. You are commenting u...

Wapello Warbler's Louisa County. Life 25 miles from the nearest stoplight. Lost in the Corn. October 25, 2010. Posted by Wapello Warbler in Grandview. Friday night I tagged along as our church youth group and Venture Crew 007 took in the Corn Maze at Barnyard Blooms in Grandview. I had a blast. The teens ran the maze, pausing occasionally to scare the beejeebers out of each other. Weather permitting, the maze will be open through Halloween. Click here. For cost, hours, and directions. Wapello Warbler's Louisa County. Life 25 miles from the nearest stoplight. Keeping Up with the Fun. October 22, 2010. Posted by Wapello Warbler in Events. October and November are outdoor months here in Iowa. Harvest is progressing rapidly. Football, marching band contests, and cross country have the teens outside. In addition, the County Conservation Board and the Port Louisa Refuge have come up with some unique outdoor programs. Last weekend, I was out at Virginia Grove Park. PS Congratulations to the ...

Wapello Warbler's Louisa County. Life 25 miles from the nearest stoplight. Local Tribes Had Their Own Look. August 31, 2009. Posted by Wapello Warbler in History. Recently, I attended the Meskwakie Powwow near Tama with my daughter and her two children. I finally learned what the American Indians who lived in and around Louisa County wore on their heads. Looking at paintings and actual photographs, I knew it wasn’t feathers, but what was it? Nearby was a wikiup, a cone-shaped house made of sticks woven i...

February 19, 2010 @ 8:44 pm. 183; { Uncategorized. My Friend K.who was talking to me yesterday and trying to make me feel better said that he had read this quote somewhere and it applies to my life. It was ” The night is the darkest before dawn”.i dunno if that quote really holds true. My question is does this darkness have a name? And how did it find me? But someone rightly said – It’s going to stay dark until you do something about it and let some light in. What should I do? Will I ever see the light?

Sunday, February 11, 2007. Dad finished his first week of teaching high school math on Friday and has found a new level of stress that he has never experienced. He said that even flying helicopters in the jungles of Vietnam was less stressful than his first week of teaching. Every teacher I know can echo the level of stress, and many more haven't made it more than a week or two. I thought healthcare had issues - but I think that education has its fair share. Oh, the need for systems change! We raced to a...
