Observations, from near and far. In the morning, we headed to Barleben, about 3 hours southeast, near Magdeburg. In the fields, potatoes and golden barley slowly gave way to sugar beets and feed corn. We passed through charming towns filled with Fachwerkhäuser,. The half-timbered houses that resemble the Tudor-style houses of England. The old post office in Barleben, an example of Fachwerk. At noon we went to Zielitz, to meet more Tibkes! Margot, Marianne, Doris, Linda). Germany cemeteries are beautiful.

Observations, from near and far. Places old and new. Rustem Pasha, the guy who commissioned the mosque, really loved Iznik tile. Almost every surface inside is covered in it. Tulips, roses and almond blossoms twine and twirl up the walls. This mosque is small and intimate, and surprisingly peaceful given that it is only one floor above a busy commercial neighborhood. Also amazingly - no cats! Dinner time found me back in Taksim, gazing into the window of Saray Muhallebicisi. Thank god I didn't notice...

Observations, from near and far. Essentially, the Copenhagen airport is a mall with some planes, with everything from Victoria's Secret to Georg Jensen. Soon after Linda, Marianne, Jurgen and Inge arrived, but unfortunately Jurgen and Inge's luggage did not. Then we found out the Ford minivan we reserved had not been returned yet. So the morning was a bit bumpy, but we eventually found ourselves on the road to Harsefeld. A cute pig's snout in Hamburg. Green fields of Niedersachsen. A door at the hotel.

Observations, from near and far. On Saturday morning we went to Borghorst, in Ahlerstedt, to meet the Tibkes. Ahlerstedt, about five miles from Harsefeld, was founded more than 900 years ago. It used to be primarily a farming village, but nowadays only two farms are left. One of them is Borghost, Ahlerstedt's oldest farm, and the ancestral home of the Tibke family. When we came back to the house, another feast - this time kaffee und kuchen. Oh, but what kuchen! Or is my German really zero?
