From Salford to Uganda and beyond. Well, I am now en route to the airport after saying goodbye to my children and parents for 4 weeks. Feeling ok at the moment but I still have Mark with me yet. I have been pampered today and had my hair and nails done so I feel all refreshed and ready for this challenge. The next time I will probably get to update is when we arrive in Fort Portal in 24 hours time. 15 days to go……. Less than 5 weeks. Less than five weeks to go until we fly, still not got the flight times...

Sarah Muwanguzi is a Senior Midwife at the Mulago Hospital in Uganda working with the THET funded Liverpool-Mulago Partnership to train health workers and improve health outcomes for patients. As she prepares to visit the UK and speak at THET’s 25. Anniversary event in Salford on the 25. Kate's Adventures in Uganda: A Bad Case of the 51's
http://katealldredinuganda.blogspot.com/2010/07/bad-case-of-51s.html
Thursday, 22 July 2010. A Bad Case of the 51's. We ran a skills training morning which we opened up to all staff. Disappointingly, only the midwives attended, but there were 15 in the group. We covered Eclampsia, PPH, shoulder dystocia, neonatal resuscitation and vaginal breech delivery. It was a really fun morning and I think that the staff enjoyed it as much as we did. Tuesday, 17 August 2010. Um Bongo, Um Bongo, there is none in the Congo! It took me the best part of 3 weeks solid work, but was worth it. Kate's Adventures in Uganda: November 2009
http://katealldredinuganda.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 November 2009. The winds of change. And management of normal labour. There's a huge amount of enthusiasm in the department at the moment, to change the way things are done. We're talking about everything from strategies for decongesting. Labour ward, setting up specific clinical areas and concepts to changing the way all staff work, initiatives to encourage teamwork and so on. A lot of it is a pipedream. At the moment, but it's an achievable pipedream. And Flanders would write a song about.

Kate's Adventures in Uganda: May 2010

Thursday, 13 May 2010. A Chimp Off the Old Block. Things have really picked up pace. With only 11 weeks left here I have so much to complete. I'm in that pre-amble phase of writing lots of lists and making pretty coloured timelines, which is somehow reminiscent of revising for any set of important exams. 'We need the induction of labour guideline urgently' and 'When can you set up the HDU? Suggested to me that the head of department is also conscious of my nearing departure. And chimps are here. All men ...

Kate's Adventures in Uganda: Misadventures in Mombasa and beyond
http://katealldredinuganda.blogspot.com/2010/07/misadventures-in-mombasa-and-beyond.html
Sunday, 25 July 2010. Misadventures in Mombasa and beyond. Arriving at the airport in good time, excited about the prospect on being in the tin can for less than an hour, I walked up to the check in desk and presented my passport to receive the dreaded words 'Your flight has been cancelled'. 'What? We can fly you to Nairobi tonight, there are no more flights to Zanzibar today'. 'You're going to fly me to Nairobi? As I was gripped by the familiar rumble, accompanied by a profuse cold sweat. 'Now? There wa...

Kate's Adventures in Uganda: Doris Days
http://katealldredinuganda.blogspot.com/2010/06/doris-days.html
Sunday, 20 June 2010. Wow, the weeks seem to go by more and more quickly. And my blogging seems to get less frequent. The next week was dedicated to finalising some stuff for the upcoming Liverpool Mulago exchange, putting the finishing touches to the HDU paintwork and completing some of the paperwork that we need in order to get the HDU running. Doris; 'Who has been feeding the bones of fish to her? Me; 'Who has been feeding the bones of fish to who? Me; 'I doubt it was Justus, it may have been George'.

Kate's Adventures in Uganda: August 2010
http://katealldredinuganda.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 August 2010. I bought enough African souvenirs to sink a ship, and then realised that I might not be able to get them all home. I decided that I was going to sacrifice many of my clothes in order to get them home - I was prepared to abandon all of my possessions entirely to get a painting home which I had bought, by an artist named Edison Mugalu. By that, I think she meant clothes. I hope that she enjoyed it. Tuesday, 17 August 2010. Um Bongo, Um Bongo, there is none in the Congo! All men d...
