For anyone who’s interested in learning more about the wider water issues facing this world, Coursera (a free online educational platform run by the University of Manchester) is offering a 2 part course on Water Supply and Sanitation in Developing Countries. The 1st part starts on 26th May, and it isn’t too late to sign up.

Living Water Africa was launched on the 23rd January 2010 in Salisbury Cathedral, at the memorial service for Samantha Verschueren. After witnessing water poverty first hand during a trip to Mombasa, Kenya in 2008, Samantha shared with her family a deep concern for this appalling problem. Living Water Africa was then set up in her loving memory, following her passing on 22nd August 2009. We believe in the Starfish Principle. To create synergy and increase effectiveness wherever possible.

Water poverty brings many problems children fetch water instead of attending school, women have to spend hours each day in the back-breaking work of carrying water, and thousands suffer from fatal or debilitating water-borne disease. Beating water poverty needs, as well as clean water, latrines and hygiene education. Clean water isn’t enough if it’s made dirty because of a lack of toilets, and use of toilets must be encouraged by hygiene education to get communities to change the habits of generations.
