I See Cairo, I See France

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Friday, July 17, 2009. Well, this is my last day in Paris, and I have mixed feelings about it. I've had fun here, but I'm also ready to go home, sleep in my own bed, eat my favorite pizza, and get back to work. There was also a flea-market-like area where people were selling clothing and various knickknacks. I found a shirt that sent a truly empowering message. I, too, want to be right, even if I attract the glaures. Posted by Elizabeth D.

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Wednesday, April 29, 2009. I See Cairo, I See France: Musée de la Chasse

http://www.lizinegypt.blogspot.com/2009/07/musee-de-la-chasse.html

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Sunday, July 12, 2009. Musée de la Chasse. Le Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature is about nature - and how much people like to chase and kill it! Jenny (a friend from college) and I met up to tackle it together yesterday and had a blast. The museum is devoted to hunting and hunting culture from times past. The most unsurprising part of the exhibit was the trophy room crammed with animals you are not allowed to hunt anymore. Musée de la Chas...

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Monday, July 6, 2009. While I am listening to talks about Ugaritic scribes, ancient adoption practices, and exorcisms (looking forward to that one! I figured you guys would rather read about something else. So here it is - Ads of Paris! Those of you who followed my Berlin blog know that I enjoy collecting photos of strange advertisements and posting them on the internet, and this summer is no different. Indeed. Same power? I admit the photo...

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Thursday, July 9, 2009. The RAI is wrapping up today, and I have had a great time! I ended up making a few new friends, having some great conversations, and listening to some interesting talks. My favorite part of being at the conference was watching old friends from around the world get excited to see each other. Maybe one day I will have friends like that! Well it turns out that they ARE! Later members of this illustrious family were impo...

I See Cairo, I See France: Bastille Day

http://www.lizinegypt.blogspot.com/2009/07/bastille-day.html

I See Cairo, I See France. Summer adventures in Egypt and Paris. Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Today, July 14th, is Bastille Day and France's Fête Nationale. There was no class today because of the holiday, so in the morning I went to check out the traditional military parade down Champs-Élysées, which was absolutely PACKED with people. Everyone just stood for a while, waiting, staring at the motionless soldiers lined up in the street. And suddenly planes were roaring overhead. Posted by Elizabeth D.

Gyrovague: Aleppo!

http://lizinsyria.blogspot.com/2010/07/aleppo.html

Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Friday, July 2, 2010. We went back to meet the Hanadi desk guy because we were considering hiring one of his drivers for a day trip. This was definitely not to be, because when we sat down to talk he immediately launched into a discussion of how I had a man's haircut, but didn't seem like a man, and he was confused—was I a man or a woman? The mosque was again a gorgeous place filled with families just hanging out, their children piling onto a fo...

Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Friday, July 2, 2010. The church was also filled with some strange objects, such as helmets, bows and arrows, thrones, and sun-bleached carpets. One of the men working at the church informed us that it was currently being used as the set for an Egyptian movie. He didn't know the title, but one day I hope to see this masterpiece. Dan and I couldn't resist messing around with the props a little. Posted by Elizabeth D. July 3, 2010 at 7:29 AM.

Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Thursday, July 1, 2010. 8221; at you as you walk by. One little girl coveted Dan’s and my ice cream bars so much that she dashed right over and demanded a taste, so I broke off a piece of the chocolate shell and gave it to her. Garden Restaurant honestly is a nice place to spend an evening, and the prices are totally reasonable compared with other restaurants in the area. Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Monday, July 12, 2010. We also got to see a statue of Domitian that looked like a giant murderous baby. No wonder nobody liked that guy. Printed on the soles, so that lascivious men could follow them home. And then there was the impressively well-preserved latrine, which featured very smooth seats but, at least by modern standards, left you a little too close to your neighbor for comfort. Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Friday, July 2, 2010. There is a direct bus to Hama that stops at the Palmyra bus station once per day, but it was already full of passengers from its city of origin when it got there, so Dan and I went to Homs first and then caught a quick ride to Hama. Both towns make good bases for day trips to the surrounding area, but we chose Hama because we’d heard it was beautiful. Posted by Elizabeth D. July 2, 2010 at 10:30 PM. 800 Years of Love.

Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Thursday, July 15, 2010. If you must share your man with a bajillion other women, you might as well do it in style. And those ladies got to live in total luxury. The entire harem area was decorated with a blitz of colored tiles and painted ceilings. There was never a moment when I didn't have something interesting to look at. I had been feeling a bit ho-hum about Topkapi Palace until it was harem time. The orientalist paintings were also amazing...

Summer wanderings through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Sunday, July 25, 2010. The Coptic papyrology summer school at Strasbourg was FUN. Basically I hung out with a bunch of other Coptic nerds from Europe and the US. We listened to lectures about palaeography, Shenoute, bilingual archives, what have you—then we all went out for a big meal accompanied by many glasses of beer and wine. I even got my own swank room to stay in all week! Posted by Elizabeth D. Saturday, July 17, 2010. Well, the sun.).

This is my life, in Dublin. On new year resolutions. Every year I try to make resolutions. I don't make promises that I can't keep (for example: meet and befriend Brie Larson, become gal-pals, text daily and meet up weekly for drinks) but I do set goals for myself that are a challenge, better my life and, most importantly, have…. Back to the present. Also, I’m sick for the first time since I’ve been here.
