花旗鎖最早、最多的外形為魚形，漢代 芝田錄 載有 門鑰必以魚，取其不瞑目，守夜之義. 依此推斷，魚形的簧片掛鎖，最遲出現於漢代 ( 公元前 206 公元220 年 )。 有些廣鎖是以鎖體的外形來命名 如早期的廣鎖呈長筒形，酷似爆仗，俗稱 爆仗鎖 ，亦有廣鎖的外形呈方塊狀，故稱為 方鎖 ，此外，部份廣鎖的外形宛如一尾蜷曲的蝦，因而名之為 蝦尾鎖。 有種古鎖的外形呈圓柱狀，體似水桶，鎖樑上部像水桶把手，底部拖個尾巴，鎖體表面刻有 " 百家保鎖 " 四個字，屬民俗器物，材質為金、銀、銅等。 2015 national science and technology museum.

簧片 ( 構造 ) 鎖使用時需要鑰匙，又可分為廣鎖及花旗鎖兩種 ( 文字 ) 組合鎖使用時不需鑰匙，只要將轉輪上之文字轉至正確的位置，即可開啟。 十三經注疏 中說 東西為轉，南北為廣 ， 辭源 解釋為 南北為縱，東西為橫。 早期的廣鎖，其端面呈長圓筒形 中期的廣鎖，即明朝 ( 公 元 1368 1644 年 )、 清朝 ( 公元 1644 1911 年 ) 時期的廣鎖，其端面上部呈三角形、下部呈斜方形，材質大多為銅 後期的廣鎖出現於二十世紀，其端面上部呈三角形、下部呈正方形，材質多為黃銅，亦有雲南白銅與鐵質者。 花 是指花樣， 旗 則有表示的意思 左傳 中說 佩，衷之旗也 ， 十三經注疏 中說 旗，表也。 2015 national science and technology museum.

這類鎖具，由於開鎖須分四次進行，因此稱為 四開鎖 再者，由於必須打開多重機關才-能找到鑰匙孔，因此又稱為 機關鎖。 有些古鎖的鑰匙孔隱藏在底面，其上蓋有鏤成花樣的銅蓋板，必須滑動銅蓋板才會顯露出鑰匙 孔， 此類鎖具稱為 花邊鎖。 複合式的設計，必須將鑰匙頭的特定部份、以特定的方位與鑰鎖孔的特定位置接觸，才能將鑰匙插入，這類鎖具稱為 迷宮鎖 或 定向鎖 這樣的設計，即使他人擁有正確的鑰匙，一時之間仍難以將鎖具打開。 上鎖時，長簧片弓卡在鎖體壁內，開鎖時，必須先用一把鑰匙擠壓鉗制長簧片，使鎖栓移動，直到短簧片卡在鎖體壁內，接著用另一把鑰匙擠壓鉗制短簧片，使鎖栓整個通過鎖體壁內的卡口而開鎖 這類鎖具稱為 二開鎖 或 雙開鎖。 2015 national science and technology museum.
