Monday, April 7, 2008. Well 5 days with no electricity has made me realise how dependent we are on this energy. The telephone,the gas, the water bed, the computer to pay the bills,the radio, TV of course,light, the electric kettle, fridge,freezer and oven. The stress of having no electricity. Sunday, October 20, 2013. Last days in Istanbul (2). Istanbul is a vibrant city - we were staying in Beyoglu near lots of bars and hip places. But during the day there were still practical activities such as the shoe shine man's spot. And some good old fashioned hat shops - straight out of one of Orhan Pamuk's books below. And protection to be had for around 50 cents AUD. Last days in Istanbul. The view from our apartment window. Cats rule the city - they sleep where and when they want. In the shop window.

We wandered along Iskaklal Street and explored alleys and shops built in the1800s. Bees in the wrought iron. There are lovely little courtyards where coffee is drunk at a leisurely pace. Friday, October 11, 2013. Istanbul - perfect autumn day. We headed off to walk across the bridge from Europe to Asia this morning. It took about ten minnute. here are some views from the bridge. The Bosphorus is very busy with ferries nd tour boats dancing around each other. See the tower in the middle of the picture below? Our apartments are just 100 meters or so from that tower. There were close to a hundred fishermen on the bridge. There were people selling bait and supplies as well.

Friday, October 11, 2013. We are here to see the Istanbul Biennale. A terrific range of artists and work and, just like Venice, too much amazing art to report on here. And to explore the delights of the Istanbulli cuisine. The cheese pie from this vendor below was wonderful. We have been appreciating the beauty of the city, and a huge highlight was the visit t the Museum of Innocence. A museum based on the book of the same name by Orhan Pamuk.
