Lulu Takes Niger

Monday, December 15, 2008. A Goodbye to Babagade. Unfortunately things ended in a rough way- I had to watch my best friend Kadija forced into marriage and leave the village just a few days before I left. Kadija is a woman I call my sister, literally we don't use each others names she just calls me. My younger sister) and I call her. My last day in the village was Tuesday, so all day villagers were coming to tell me "bye-bye" and just hang out for the last time. How could you leave us, Kadija? To my villa...

Lulu Takes Niger: October 2007

http://luluwm.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 30, 2007. Originally uploaded by lulum1032. An injustice has occured. So sadly enough Matt left Niger last night, but hopes to fight his way not back to Iraq. Is it really fair to pull a current Peace Corps volunteer who is already serving their country for peace to pull them out for war? How do we explain to our villagers that we are here to promote peace when we pull them out to fight in a war. So, a fellow PCV has written up a petition to attempt to bring attention to his cause:.

Lulu Takes Niger: How to Make American Food

http://luluwm.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-to-make-american-food.html

Sunday, December 14, 2008. How to Make American Food. The first day there is a big meal in the afternoon which each women in my concession brings a dish. At the end of Ramadan holiday I made lentils, this time I made "American Food". Since my gas ran out, I had to cook it over a 3 rock stove. So here's the recipe:. 2 cups chopped onions. 1/4 cup chopped garlic. 1 large can of tomato paste. 2 small bags dried, pounded cassava. 1/4 cup curry powder. 1/3 cup peanut butter. 1 can of green beans.

Lulu Takes Niger: Marriage, Divorces, Tampons and more...

http://luluwm.blogspot.com/2008/11/marriage-divorces-tampons-and-more.html

Sunday, November 2, 2008. Marriage, Divorces, Tampons and more. This past week we got back from a 3-day training at ICRISAT- an agricultural research center about 40k from Niamey. Roughly 10 PCVs each took a counterpart from their village- which i actually took the two men I’ve been working extensively with for gum arabic. But all the Nigeriens seemed extremely motivated and interested and hopefully walked away from the training with some new knowledge. Last time I leave tampons sitting out on my table!

Lulu Takes Niger: May 2008

http://luluwm.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Wow Wow. Wow. when I visited America everyone asked me if I felt culture shock. My answer- not really. I felt like i clicked back into my American self. But this time, after traveling around West Africa? I think my knees are still shaking from the walk! But soooo good to be back in Niger. Made me appreciate Nigeriens. No hassles, no getting ripped off, no one grabbing me as i walk to market. So it's back to speaking zarma and in 2 days back to Babagade. Days on vacation: 26. Cross...

Lulu Wolf : Blog

Sunday, March 20, 2011. Toshiko Takaezu, a Japanese-American ceramist whose closed pots and torpedolike cylinders, derived from natural forms, helped to elevate ceramics from the production of functional vessels to a fine art, died on March 9 in Honolulu. She was 88. In her stoneware and porcelain works, some small enough to fit in the palm of one hand, others monoliths more than six feet tall, Ms. Takaezu blended the expressive bravura of painters like Jackson Pollock.
