In Praise of Older Buildings". Saturday, August 9, 2014. Day Tripper - Fairfield House. Fairfield House (1793) is one of those unique and beautiful heritage houses that I have often visited, but never entered. On a recent trip to Adolphustown, I captured some extra time to travel the Loyalist Parkway eastward to the outskirts of Amherstview, because I had read that the house was open for tours during July and August. The interior - as I expected - was nothing short of astonishing. We started our tour...

In Praise of Older Buildings". Thursday, May 7, 2015. Foster Ward Community Centre. I'm about to go off-line for a few days. One of the things I will be doing is doing some research into the earlier times of Belleville, and one of its most colourful neighbourhoods, which lay between the tracks and the wharves; an industrial neighbourhood of foundries and rolling mills, coal yards, oil tanks, trains, docks and some pretty tenacious folks. Image, the street became St. Paul Street. Free to good home. My Anc...

In Praise of Older Buildings". Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Charming Dutch duo 1924. Saturday night we gathered at a neighbour's house to celebrate Dutch Liberation Day, the 1945 liberation of the battle-weary Netherlands by Allied - most memorably Canadian - troops. Follow this Canadian War Museum. Link for powerful actual newspaper accounts from that time. One of a pair of 1924 Dutch Colonial houses in Belleville. To honour all Dutch connections everywhere, I offer this selection of Dutch Colonial Revival hou...

ancestral roofs: "That bastard Cromwell!"
http://ancestralroofs.blogspot.com/2015/05/that-bastard-cromwell.html
In Praise of Older Buildings". Tuesday, May 5, 2015. I love old utilitarian buildings. Weathered barn-board. Rusting steel roofs. Collapsing wood ones. That fusing of resplendent weeds and deteriorating lumber. Not very useful of course, and unlikely, given their status, that they are long for this world. Just then a thick Scottish brogue announced the somewhat unsettling arrival of William Todhunter, B.B., on the scene. (B.B? Visited by his son on honeymoon. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In Praise of Older Buildings". Tuesday, July 22, 2014. Merrickville has its share of uniquely constructed and clad buildings. Plank on plank, log hidden under subsequent refinements still to explore. This beautiful frame, with its lovely Gothic inspired barge-board and trims is gradually being restored. Patience my friends, you are doing important things here. The flush-board cladding of this second house, a block away, appears to be disappearing under vinyl siding? Sunday, July 20, 2014. We then returne...

In Praise of Older Buildings". Thursday, October 30, 2014. Stone Diaries - Princess on Princess. I've been watching this fine Kingston limestone house for some time. It sits along busy commercial Princess Street West in Kingston, near perennial favourite Aunt Lucy's Restaurant, famous when I was a kid in high school. Just recently, I read the next chapter in the house's history. I caught up to it in the proceedings of the 2014 Heritage Conservation Awards from the Frontenac Heritage Foundation. Almost ce...

ancestral roofs: Lunenburg Longings
http://ancestralroofs.blogspot.com/2015/05/lunenburg-longings.html
In Praise of Older Buildings". Thursday, May 7, 2015. Regular visitor Mark joined the discussion about gambrel roofed houses recently. He queried my placement of the gambrel roof's appearance at late 1700's in New Amsterdam, citing even earlier examples of the form in the Maritimes (can't recall where I got that date.). We will go back. But for now, just to indulge myself, I'm posting some Lunenburg photos, and travelling back to the east coast. Oddly, not a gambrel roof in the lot! May 9, 2015 at 7:05 PM.

In Praise of Older Buildings". Saturday, May 23, 2015. Two things popped up on Facebook lately, which have a connection to each other, and to the incredible collection of WWII buildings at the former Camp Picton, now called Loch Sloy Developments. It's a place I have special fondness for. Krista Dalby, a local artist, has just posted about a quarterly networking event. Called Creative Rural Minds - the Loch Sloy Edition. Worth checking out. Then there was the astonishing Facebook post. I was in. The ...
