Lusaka Sunrise: Soccer Night in Africa II

http://lusakasunrise.blogspot.com/2008/01/soccer-night-in-africa-ii.html

January 23, 2008. Soccer Night in Africa II. The African Cup of Nations, and figured I would offer something of a more candid update in here. Despite heartbreaking power cuts (see: in the middle of Nigeria - Ivory Coast), the tournament has been a cultural spectacle and a convenient excuse to socialize and drink. The perfect way to ride out a mostly reponsibility-free last month. And the football's been pretty damn good, too. On Sunday, Ghana belted a last-gasp winner. From the auspiciously-named Zidan.

Lusaka Sunrise: 'Lusaka's Ditch Flower'

http://lusakasunrise.blogspot.com/2008/02/lusakas-ditch-flower.html

February 4, 2008. Go for a walk anywhere in Lusaka - even in my yuppie suburb - and you'll invariably come across an empty carton of cheap 'beer' rotting in the ditch. Owing to the fact that my Zambian friends and colleagues would never touch the stuff and it's only sold in compound areas, I hadn't tried the fabled 'Shake Shake' opaque beer until last night. And soon, provided I can get it back safely, so will you. Read more reviews of 'Chibuku' here. International Beer, after all. West Africa: Kevin Hill.

Lusaka Sunrise: Rules for My Return

http://lusakasunrise.blogspot.com/2008/01/rules-for-my-return.html

January 24, 2008. Rules for My Return. With February 18 fast approaching, social obligations are starting to add up. Thusly, as a general guide, I'd like to lay some ground rules to avoid oft-asked questions, gross speculation and misconceptions. 1 Don't ask me: "How was Africa? 2 Don't expect a curio:. As much as I would love to bring everyone an ebony serving spoon with a warthog carved into the handle, I hate craft markets. 4 No, I didn't get (too) sick:. 5 Yes, I got robbed:. 6 Don't ask me to speak ...

Lusaka Sunrise: Last Week: What the Bloggers Say

http://lusakasunrise.blogspot.com/2008/02/last-week-what-bloggers-say.html

February 11, 2008. Last Week: What the Bloggers Say. A diligent effort to make one post a day before I head home*. Chris, as per usual, has used his words to great effect. In describing in the emotions that go along with the feeling of impending return from his JHR experience. I'll offer my own ruminations in due course, but for now, check out his. Got me thinking. Generalísimo Brando: Zambia, One Year On

http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/01/zambia-one-year-on.html

If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. January 28, 2009. Zambia, One Year On. It's been almost 12 months since I left life in Lusaka. Pictured above (at right) is Derrick Sinjela, one of Lusaka's most determined journalists, holding a certificate of incorporation from the Zambian Government. As of November 2008, Derrick's vision for media development - what he calls the Rainbow Media Group - is a legal entity and can even be traded publicly on the Lusaka Stock Exchange. Professiona...

Generalísimo Brando: I'm peaking?!

http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/04/peaking.html

If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. April 13, 2009. I completed the last of my tortuously long Sunday runs yesterday. I feel less bad than I have some other Mondays - including one when I could barely walk to work - but even still, I have shooting pains in both legs, an aversion to anything resembling stairs and a trademark limp that I'd like to coin Runner's Hobble. I had a good 30 minute run today, and now I'm eating chocolate. Ha! April 13, 2009 at 9:16 PM.

Generalísimo Brando: Marathon by the numbers

http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/04/marathon-by-numbers.html

If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. April 27, 2009. Marathon by the numbers. Time in hours, minutes and seconds it took to cover the 42.3km. Kilometres run in training. Pounds lost in the process. Dollars raised in support of St. John's Ambulance. Minutes it took to run an overzealous first 10k. Kilometres into the race when I hit the first 'wall'. Times I broke down and cried during kilometres 39 through 42. Senior citizens that breezed by me. Runners who finished ahead of me.

Generalísimo Brando: Wanted: one World Cup travel partner

http://bscurrie.blogspot.com/2009/05/wanted-one-world-cup-travel-partner.html

If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. May 21, 2009. Wanted: one World Cup travel partner. This past weekend I had a ridiculously good time in Toronto with Mike Li, an old friend from Laurier, and his roommate Jane. Though significantly hindered by tomfoolery, we started planning our trip to Southern Africa next year. As such, I have thought up some criteria that will hopefully help me identify and rate potential candidates. If you think you’re up to it, don’t hesit...I’d lik...

42.6: Tell me to shut up

http://fortytwopointsix.blogspot.com/2009/05/tell-me-to-shut-up.html

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Tell me to shut up. I'll be home in two weeks. This is clearly exciting. But a small part of me is also a tad nervous about the repatriation process. You see, I've heard quite a lot about 'reverse culture shock' - how difficult it can be to return to one's original society after spending time abroad under vastly different circumstances. But my Toronto boss, Carissa, confided over dinner a coupl...

Three-fingers Brown: September 2006

http://perpetuallyspellbound.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." - Oscar Wilde. Saturday, September 23, 2006. The immediacy of desire. And then I left class and went to the Cord office, checked my email and immediately wanted to help all my writers ensure they wrote their best articles this week - that Tones and I put out a damn fine News section. And as I lie in bed in those semi-conscious moments before sleep, my mind races through all the people I wish I saw more of, the amazing friends I ha...

If I had more time, I would have written less." - Mark Twain. February 10, 2009. Too Hot for GV. During a trip to Ottawa in November, I interviewed. For Governance Village. The India-born professor was, until recently, a long-time employee of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and held down foreign postings all over Asia, most notably in Afghanistan soon after the fall of the Taliban and at the beginning of Canada's development efforts there. Chickens and shopping malls

Chickens and shopping malls. Keskiviikko 3. joulukuuta 2008. This post is dedicated to my mother, who was worried what one can eat in Lusaka, especially if one is a picky vegetarian. She's not reading this, but she can see herself when she comes for a visit. Zambian family can presumably consume two sacks of mealie-meal (maize flour) in a month. One sack is 25 kg. The price of mealie-meal has doubled in a few months to about 10 euros a sack, amounting to a Zambian equivalent of the financial crisis.
