Saturday, March 28, 2015. Dog Food is a Tax Deduction. I often hear from my animal lover clients that they should be able to deduct the cost of their pets. After all, they're a member of the family, right? Unfortunately the IRS does not feel the same way about your Fluffy and Fido. However, if you were to foster an animal in your home for a recognized 501(c)3 organization you could deduct the cost of the food, vet bills and any other expenses you incur in connection with caring for that furry friend.
