Particle Engineering Research Center. What is a Particle? Everything is a particle! Wallace H. Coulter. The definition of particle is very different based on the discipline and perspective we are looking at them. Here, we define a particle as a small discrete quantity of matter that has an interface with the surrounding environment. Why do we study Particles? There are three qualities of particles that make them unique and worthy of their own field of scientific investigation. Particles are indeed everyw...

Particle Engineering Research Center. PERC realizing that education is the most effective path to stress out the importance of particles and PS&T, has initiated a variety of K-12 Programs. K-12 Programs include undergraduate students visiting local middle schools to display particle science and nanotechnology demonstrations. This program has been dormant over the past year due to lack of funding, but it will be reactivated to fulfill the objective of the K-12 Programs. What is a Particle?

Particle Engineering Research Center. The ERC Industry program started with commitment from 25 members comprised of large and small companies. Over the ensuing 11 years of the NSF center grant, the research program continuously evolved according to the needs of the students, faculty and the Center's industry partners. Industry membership rose from 25 to a high of about 50 participating companies, finally settling at an equilibrium level of about 40 companies, where it remains today. What is a Particle?
