Mallaig Oral History Project

What are its aims? The Mallaig Oral History Project. Was launched on 19 April 2008 and aims to record interviews with at least 50 people about their memories of living and working in Mallaig and the Mallaig fishing fleet. Why is the Project needed? How to get here. Living around the Loch. Among the many photographs in the Mallaig Heritage Centre collection are about sixty school groups and many others showing groups of people at different functions and occasions, at work and at leisure. The identities of many people appearing in the older photographs have been forgotten but we would like to identify as many of the people in these photographs as possible. Mallaig schools before 1950. Mallaig schools since 1950. And we will try to resolve the problem.

Work began on collecting for the Mallaig Heritage Centre in 1985 and since then an impressive collection of photographs, postcards and other images illustrating the region's past and present has been assembled. Only a small percentage of these can be displayed in the Centre at one time, but further examples can be seen on this page and on Gallery Page 2. A rare postcard which shows the head of Loch nan Uamh, between Lochailort and Arisaig, before the construction of the railway viaduct.

Oral History Resources [Mallaig Heritage Centre]

http://mallaigheritage.org.uk/mohp/index.htm

How to get here. Living around the Loch. Mallaig Heritage Centre has a collection of more than 50 video and audio recordings. Most of these were collected as part of the Mallaig Oral History Project between 2008 and 2010. As the amount of material recorded by the Project amounts to well over 100 hours, it will be possible to make only a relatively small amount available online. We are working on editing the video interviews so that we can upload excerpts to Vimeo. George Lawrie: Living on the Point.
