robots never sleep: April 2007

Thoughts on manga from a professional translator. Saturday, April 28, 2007. By Kengo Hanazawa (花沢健吾). Published in Big Comic Spirits (Shogakukan). In an earlier review of a Big Comic Spirits title, I said that I had a bad tendency to write off BCS series due to a rash of what I like to call "man-boy" seinen. Series, manga that are no more sophisticated or demanding than simple shonen. When discussing the topic of "otaku," there are several facets of this subculture that can be examined. The obsession...

Thoughts on manga from a professional translator. Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Some Things I've Read Recently. Since I'm just banging this out before bedtime and with the momentum of a beer or two behind me, I'll run through these real quick in the order I see them on my shelf:. Goodnight Punpun 1-2 (Inio Asano). Mysterious Girlfriend X 1-2 (Riichi Ueshiba). Weird and fetishized for mainstream acceptance (as far as the Afternoon readership goes).but it's a very savvy. Kyomusume 1 (Kon Kimura). Another Afterno...

robots never sleep: Flying Girl
http://robotsneversleep.blogspot.com/2007/06/flying-girl.html
Thoughts on manga from a professional translator. Sunday, June 3, 2007. By Tetsu Kasabe (笠辺哲). Published in Ikki (Shogakukan). In Kasabe's case, he carved out his niche with a lengthy series of individual one-shots (six, in fact) over a span of 18 months, all of which were collected in the excellent Bunnies and Others. Before starting on his first serial with Flying Girl. This more or less confirms what I've seen in some of his scanlated one-shots. Very light, goofy reading. June 3, 2007 at 9:45 PM.

i ♥ manga: Twin Spica, vol. 1
http://iheartmanga.blogspot.com/2010/03/twin-spica-vol-1.html
I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Sunday, March 28, 2010. Twin Spica, vol. 1. Time to dust off my poor, neglected blog! After a month of silence, I'm glad to be back—moving and freelance writing assignments have been keeping me busy. And what better way to come back to manga blogging than with a super-sized review of Vertical's new Twin Spica. While I didn't care for the glossed-over physical violence...

I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Wednesday, February 17, 2010. My Heavenly Hockey Club, vol. 3. In talking to a friend about this series, I realized that I was a little too hard on it initially. I often compare it to the reverse-harem comedy Ouran High School Host Club. Is a caricature of OHSHC. Does "it" better, but it certainly is entertaining in its own way. Links to this post. For some reason, I ...

I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Thursday, January 28, 2010. VB Rose, vol. 1. This is another title that I was turned on to by Danielle Leigh's Manga Before Flowers column, " 10 Underrated Shojo Titles. I was intrigued enough to check this out since, so far, Danielle is yet to let me down! And Tears of a Lamb. Is available in the U.S. from Tokyopop. Links to this post. Wednesday, January 27, 2010.

I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Yes, it's been silent around here, even with my one-year blogiversary passing me by. But, I am compelled to write today because of the shutdown of local manga publisher, CMX. CMX published a slew of great books, many of which I enjoyed. While I'm sad to see some series will never be finished (like Two Flowers for the Dragon. While I don't have m...

I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Thursday, April 1, 2010. Miss Bancho, vol. 1. After her parents’ divorce, Souka is determined to not be a burden on her now-single mother. Choosing to attend a technical high school, she sets her heart on learning a trade that can help her get a job immediately after graduation. I really liked Souka, especially because she disproves the stereotype that girls don’...

I ♥ manga. A blog featuring reviews of Japanese comics, or manga, Korean comics - also known as manhwa - and the occasional graphic novel. Sunday, April 11, 2010. To say this story is a tragedy is an understatement. Reading it was somewhat akin to a watching a train wreck—you simply cannot look away. I kept hoping for a light at the end of this dark tunnel of a story, to no avail. While I hoped side characters would provide some sort of comedic relief, even they fell short, especially Jim’s nei...Starts ...
