Craig Birding: June 2014

http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Friday, 27 June 2014. Listen to the Sedgies. For a long time I've wanted to post about this, and now with a little time, I hope I can enthuse you all to really listen to songs and decipher what's really going on. Sedge Warbler - Acrocephalus. Sedge warbler are a pretty common bird in Northern Europe, often heard and seldom seen well these beautiful sub-Saharan migrants certainly have a song which packs a punch, but what makes their songs so interesting? So, my advice, rather than spend hours inside this ...

Gillian Dinsmore’s Bird Ringing Blog: March 2012

http://gilliandinsmore.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, 22 March 2012. Last week, whilst out nest recording on campus, I came across a couple of new colour ringed Mute Swans on Airthrey Loch. Mute swans may appear to just be sedentary to 'their ponds' but they do in fact move! The last colour marked Mute Swan that I observed down on the loch turned out to have quite the history ( see here. And so I was eager to hear back about these individuals too. Green LZX was ringed as a cygnet at Linlithgow Loch in. Labels: Airthrey Loch swans. After arriving a...

Craig Birding: August 2013

http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 30 August 2013. 2013 has been a relatively slow year, ringing wise. I've ringed little of interest and therefore haven't updated the blog. Now however, I'm back in Gedser, Denmark; where I have now work for a few weeks. I'll return home shortly and attend University (Nottingham Trent) in late September. We've ringed a couple of thousand birds throughout August. Mainly warblers, Reed, Marsh,Willow,Wood, Garden and Icterine. Also Blackcap, White and Lesser Whitethroat also help make the bulk. Birde...

Friday, 2 May 2014. First year at Uni is quickly coming to an end. It's been quite a few months. Meeting some lifelong friends along the way, this academic year has been an amazing journey. Learning so much and gathering invaluable skill sets throughout. Below are some of the moth highlights thus far. Purple Thorn 1st generation, Brackenhurst campus 2014. Craig Brookes. Chocolate Tip, Brackenhurst Campus 2014. Craig Brookes. Muslin moth, Brackenhurst campus 2014. Craig Brookes. This last weekend things w...

Craig Birding: February 2012

http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 February 2012. As the week draws to a close I reflect on what has been 'one to remember'. The title of this post refers to not only the amount of new birds caught this week but also a coming of age. My 21st Birthday was mid-week with a party at the weekend therefore reasonably little effort was put in to ringing. Various outings with Heather and one with Ciaran yielded a mixed bag species wise. 1st - 8 Blue Tit. 2nd - 3 Herring Gull. 3rd - 2 Black-Headed Gull. Posted by Heather Naomi McGinty.

Craig Birding: June 2012

http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, 16 June 2012. We're still quite busy with all things survey at the moment as all the spring work comes into it's crucial final stages. Ortolan Buntings are feeding youngsters, which is great news, we ringed a brood of 4 chicks last week and they luckily fledged hours before the farmer cut his grass. I was horrified to wake up to see the farmer had mown in the night. See below the open-topped nest remains. Ortolan Bunting after mowing, a sorry scene. Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus. We also fin...

Sharpe Focus Ltd: November 2014

http://sharpefocusltd.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 30 November 2014. A brief note from Sweden to let everyone know we are leaving Landsort tomorrow morning, the 1st December to start our journy home. Tonight we have been invited to dinner with Hannah and Inga who run the shop and pub here, jsut a few locals and the two of us, and this is so typical of the way we have been treated here by everyone: welcomed and made to feel part of the small community that lives here. Monday, 24 November 2014. Nearing the end of our trip. Other good catches includ...

Sharpe Focus Ltd: Nearing the end of our trip

http://sharpefocusltd.blogspot.com/2014/11/nearing-end-of-our-trip.html

Monday, 24 November 2014. Nearing the end of our trip. It has been a couple of weeks since we updated the blog with a bit of chatter. Not been that busy ringing, but time just seems to be slipping past as we head towards the end of our trip. In fact a week today will have left Landsort and should be settled into over-night digs in southern Sweden for the night. So, our trip is almost done, hopefully able to ring every one of the remaining 6 days and reach our self-imposed goal of 12,000 birds for the year.
