Sunday, December 11. I'm not a kid". This is so hard. Friday, December 9. Such a long time since I last wrote.but all has been pretty calm and steady. Not to say that things are easy, as Mom is obviously more confused these days.not recognizing everyday objects for what they are, needing much more cuing and help with little things.nothing that would be considered abnormal for her condition.but sad and-somehow-always surprising. Wednesday, August 8. Long time no words. It is hard to write when it is mostly struggle. You can see that we have sweet and beautiful times.thank goodness, we do. It is all rather sad and tiring.for Mom and for us. How do I get through? Especially as all my lovely plans for regular respite fell through soon after I last wrote of them. I am writing this from the screened porch with birdsong and faraway thunder nourishing my ears.and white sheets hanging on the line and the green apples peeking through...

Friday, November 30. Looking for a photo to place in her hands, of me and my brothers, I leafed through the album I had made for my parents thirty-some years ago.and for the first time in a very long time, was able to feel the joy and pleasure of my mom's life again, seeping through all of the rest.I was almost giddy with it.for awhile. There was one more good-bye, tho'. In the good old days, Mom would beep the horn of her sky-blue Beetle when she saw us waving towards the dip. On this day, there was...

Monday, October 3. Mom and I went to visit her brother, my Uncle Jim, last August. Mom used to often speak of him and tell me that she missed him. I hadn't seen him in many years and was old enough to know that visits with aging loved ones shouldn't be put off, so we planned a visit and it came off very well, all things considered. She hasn't brought him up in a month or two. Hanging over my own grief and the concern for my cousin and my aunt, has been the cloud of "What do we tell Mom? I feel much more ...

Thursday, November 29. Wouldn't it be loverly? Mom in Hawaii-her favorite place). We had the thought, now and then in recent days. wouldn't it be lovely. Scroll down to the little film at the end of the link) if Mom left on the night of the full moon? The moon that was her special thing.the moon she would watch rise over the water as she gracefully reclined on the chaise on the deck of her home overlooking the bay? The moon that she wore around her neck in gold and diamonds for as long as I can remember?

Friday, May 25. More than a year ago I first discovered Bob DeMarco's Alzheimer's Reading Room. I've been visiting ever since and have learned so very much through what Bob has shared with us there.especially from his journey as a caregiver for his mom Dotty. Had gone. When I came home, I found that my husband had added Duncan's name to those of Bob and Dotty that I had spelled out a few weeks ago, near the beginning of the last part of their journey together. And then this morning I found this. Sweet Do...
