About Marian’s Sons. Derek – the book. Was born in Louisiana. He needs to have all his physical needs met due to his cerebral palsy (spastic quadriplegia). He also is non-speaking and uses technology for communication. Ben is a high school graduate, creative writer and an avid sports fan. Ben tried living in a group home but it didn’t work out. About Marian’s Sons. Derek – the book. Was born at Stanford Medical Center. He had a rare syndrome, Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome. He also was missing one eye and had very poor vision in his other eye, and a hearing loss. Ilan was profoundly mentally limited but loved any toy that made noise and had buttons.
