A Little Natural History: September 2014

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Thursday, 4 September 2014. Our first stop at Arne was a yard where timber and other materials had been dumped. Vehicles have disturbed the ground here, leaving seasonally wet bare ground: just the place to look for rare plants. Mossy Stonecrop. Was here, growing next to the shocking purple and yellow flowers of Sharp-leaved Fluellen. Or between Creeping Cinquefoil and Tormentil.

Subsequent snails (more molluscs?) | snail trail 2015

My attempt to see every terrestrial land snail in the UK (or Britain, if that turns out to be easier) without properly thinking it through beforehand. Subsequent snails (more molluscs? February 8, 2015. February 8, 2015. As of yet, I’m not even sure where this species has been recorded from. That’s not particularly surprising as I have yet to get solid information on a few of the greenhouse exotics. In fact, here is my current hothouse list below and the sites in which I think they occur:. This species d...

Which is host to a couple of uncommon weevils. The bigger one is Ceutorhynchus rapae. Similar to the common obstrictus. Black and slender and untoothed in obstrictus. The small one is Ceutorhynchus pulvinatus. More densely covered in white scales but otherwise like the very common typhae. Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis. How long will th...

Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser)
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2015/06/whitethroat-with-bits-of-lesser.html
Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser). Is giving a passable impression of a Lesser Whitethroat amongst its usual song. This bird was found originally in 2014 by Roger Hicks in a similar area but wasn't really pinned down until last week when he relocated it. It joins a select group of species I've heard give copies of similar species songs - Firecrests that sounds like Goldecrests, and Willow Warblers that sound like Chiffchaffs - both of which I have now come across several times.

After seeing them very briefly first thing in the morning we eventually got brilliant views around lunchtime. Not excellent photos but I was too busy actually looking at them. Choop choop! Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": March 2014
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 9 March 2014. Thanks to Neil Wright, I finally got to hear the remaining Siberian Chiffchaff sing yesterday morning. And it sounds more or less like it should for a tristis. Take a listen:. But there is no doubt this wasn't a 'classic' bird, at least in my eyes. When it first arrived it looked good (see above) but you would have walked straight past it if you were only 'listening' for Siberian Chiffchaffs. Take a listen here:. Posted by Steve Blain. An Alternative Natural History of Sussex. This blog shows the highlights of my day to day findings as a naturalist and ecologist living and working in Sussex. Delivered with a pinch of nihilism, a dash of sarcasm and absolutely no tweeness, here is my attempt to show natural history as it really is: Brutal, beautiful, uncompromising and fascinating.and occasionally ridiculous. Species seen in UK. Brighton, Sussex, United Kingdom. View my complete profile. Mythically rare and painfully beautiful. Butterfl...
