Tuesday, 30 October 2012. Ancient arts, modern world – are they fit for purpose? This blog no doubt will upset the. Traditional practitioners but the content of the blog does have a serious point to it and that point is do old bugei martial arts systems have real practical use in a modern world? Now I am not condoning violence as something to be proud of or that these techniques are an answer to all threats of violence; believe me, I have been on the receiving end of a good kicking so nobody is infallible.

Reality Bites: September 2011

http://www.martialnews-realitybites.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Friday, 16 September 2011. In my last few blogs I have waffled on about one of my passions, the Japanese sword and the Japanese way of life. I have been inspired by many instructors and authors over the years such as Dave Lowry and Steven Turnbull and many leading authorities on Japanese civilisation. As much I am tempted to carry on writing blogs about the knowledge I am gaining on these subjects, today I would like to write about a subject with many different names. Self Defence, Street combat,. A pers...

Reality Bites: Fighting Without Learning to Fight

http://www.martialnews-realitybites.blogspot.com/2011/08/fighting-without-learning-to-fight.html

Thursday, 9 June 2011. Fighting Without Learning to Fight. Of course instructors need to make money, the rent for halls and sports centres is on the increase and equipment does not buy itself but at what point do we draw the line before we start ripping people of with their hard earned cash. Okay so I’ve had a bit of a moan so what is my point? Well try that for five minutes after training virtually none stop for six to eight hours. Not all pass the grade but if they do then trust me they deserve it.

Russian Martial Arts: June 2012

http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, 29 June 2012. I am happy to say I was invited here to write a blog; it is an honour for me to write my thoughts and for you sportsmen and women to read them. First I will run through things I have trained in, some to lesser or greater extent. I should add I have been active for 38 years, I am now aged 46. I began in a type of karate/kung fu called Kong Chang in the 70’s. I then trained in Japanese ju-jitsu and kick boxing. Before I knew where I was I found myself in Russia training and competing&...

Russian Martial Arts: October 2012

http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Monday, 15 October 2012. When I was training as long ago as 25 years in 'mixed martial arts' we simply called it 'cross training'. At the time the names in the UFC/Pride and so on came from traditional martial arts, kempo, ju jitsu and so on, same as myself and comrades. We cross trained and added to our knowledge, adapted and evolved. We kept our values and training ethics. For example, “ We teach techniques from sambo/bjj and thai, freestyle wrestling. Never trained in sambo at all. It can get you hurt...

Russian Martial Arts: May 2013

http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Monday, 20 May 2013. The fight for my life. To start I must apologise for my long, long absence. I will tell you the story and how it relates to my beloved Russian All-Round Fighting…. It got to 31st December with no lessoning of the pain, so an operation was decided upon and overnight a six hour operation freed all the adhesions. That evening, and I will spare the details in full, after I strained my stomach to vomit a 40cm scar sealed with staples burst open, with contents bursting out! Shortly after, ...

Russian Martial Arts: November 2012

http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, 17 November 2012. Russian Martial Arts Festival 2012. Autumn is the time for Vadim Kolganov's now famous Russian Martial Arts Festival. Held in Kilmarnock, Scotland each year it has grown and grown. This year is the third time the event has been held and saw fighters from England, Scotland, Ukraine, Russia and more making it a true international feel. The senior’s too was close fought; my son finding the same result as his father - losing by 1 point. Congratulations go to the gold med...The hea...

Black Belt Adventure...: August 2012

http://martialnews-blackbeltadventure.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 15 August 2012. Do you train when you are injured? Should you train when you are injured? Of course it depends to some extent on the nature of the injury and whether surgery or other medical intervention is required to correct it. Well, who hasn’t sustained some kind of injury doing martial arts? Surely if we gave up a physical activity every time we were injured we would soon become a world of couch potatoes. Being prepared to risk physical injury and endure the pain of it whilst training...

Russian Martial Arts: September 2012

http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, 30 September 2012. International Association of RAF welcomes Dave Vickers. I would first like to thank and congratulate David Vickers. Dave is quite well known and has 40 years martial arts experience. He comes from a Thai boxing background and later moved into self protection. He expressed an interest in Russian All-Round Fighting which resulted in many conversations and a two day assessment was arranged. In total, training lasted about 6/7 hours I seem to remember. After two days of very intens...

Thursday, 6 June 2013. FIAS History of Sambo from 1985. So I have decided to look to the past as sometimes History can help the future. In 1985 Fernando Compte brought together many countries interested in Sambo and on May 16. So why the name change? On a final point is Sambo originally a Russian Combat System or is it a product of the old USSR? If it is the latter all the old Soviet Republics can claim to be founders? FIAS Service Gold medal. FIAS Special award for service to International Sambo. My adv...

Reality Check

Saturday, 2 June 2012. As in, the CORRECT tool for the available target. I was speaking to my good friend Jason J-Bone Simpson yesterday and as ever we got on to the subject of MMA/Combatives/self protection etc. And a topic/question came up along the lines of, why use an open hand instead of a punch? Not word for word but along those lines as I recall from memory; surely using a palm heel would make sense here? All manner of reasoning starts to come forward as to why they would use a fist, they want to ...

Wednesday, 18 July 2012. Are we guilty of scaremongering? Ok, so all you instructors out there, have you ever asked yourself “Am I guilty of scaremongering? I have seen a number of adverts over the years, an example being: an attacker wearing a ski mask brandishing a knife and various similar scenarios. Are these just scaremongering tactics that prey on the fears of the general public? A quick search of the Met Police website ( www.met.police.uk.
