Educated musician, amateur critic. Thursday, July 29, 2010. IU's Auer Hall organ gets a workout. The Indiana University Summer Music Festival had quite a show last night in Auer Hall. Chair of the Jacobs School of Music choral department, William Jon Gray, conducted the Summer Festival Chorus and members of the Festival and Symphony orchestras for an organ-filled evening. IU professor of organ Christopher Young played the recently installed Fisk organ, consisting of almost 4000 pipes.

Long time locals remember the days when the Rat Pack performed at the Sands and every girl in town fell in love with Frank Sinatra. It was an era where couples would go out and dance the night away, have a few cheap cocktails, and return home on a music high (and perhaps a little tipsy, too). Some fifty years later, I experienced that same music high after leaving the Wynn’s new show, Sinatra- Dance With Me.

If the rowdy dancing and raucous Irish music is too much, I suggest taking a drink out to one of the patios- you’ll still get waitress service, and the people watching is fantastic. And for all you Guinness fans, the Guinness there is one of the best pours in town, and the price isn’t too outrageous for a Las Vegas Boulevard pint. May this be noted, too- whichever recording Anastos picked is the worst recording of the ballet I have ever heard. From the overture, hardly any section is in tune, the tempi are scattered and indecisive, and the balance between orchestra and percussion is far from correct.
