Our House of Straw

Friday, February 13, 2015. The floor of the llama shed is concrete, so the first step was to form the slab and put down gravel. Tyler Torgerson's crew did the concrete work. Posts to support the roof were eventually placed on the exposed All Thread rods. The surface of the slab has a rough texture. Our hope is that this will wear down the llamas' toe nails when they come inside to eat. This means we won't need to trim their nails when it's time to hit the trail. Tuesday, February 10, 2015. So, last July,...

Our House of Straw: 05/26/14

http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2014_05_26_archive.html

Monday, May 26, 2014. Scott returned yesterday from his most recent trip to Torrey. He spent four hard days at work on, you guessed it, fencing. The first project was to design and build a gate that would provide access to the llamas. Next he strung the smooth wire on the cedar posts around the orchard and put two galvanized gates in place. Here it is, ready to greet them after the hay has been cut this summer. Our together trip to Torrey brought big changes to the landscaping. The first thing we complet...

Thursday, February 5, 2015. As you might have noticed, we have been conspicuously absent from the blogosphere since our last post about Rusty. That is because, even though he did everything we asked him to do—two surgeries, physical therapy, new feeding regimes, medication—he didn’t make it. It may seem strange to some folks, but we have had and continue to have a very difficult time getting beyond that. Other times it was the “stairs game.”. He was a good sleeper. If a patch of sun appeared anywhere...

Our House of Straw: 10/28/13

http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2013_10_28_archive.html

Monday, October 28, 2013. My favorite part of a creating a list is checking off the items as they are completed. I’ve even contemplated adding “Make a list” to each one I compile so I’m able to check off something as soon as the list is written. It’s a thought. Now that our construction to-do list is getting shorter and shorter, I’m compelled to make an accounting of everything we accomplish during each Torrey visit. Our most recent trip was fifteen days long. Here’s the list:. Checked the yurt for holes.

Our House of Straw: 07/26/14

http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2014_07_26_archive.html

Saturday, July 26, 2014. Allow me to introduce my boyfriend, Rusty. Three weeks ago, he had an accident that required surgery to repair his pelvis. Having admitted to fully participating in first-world excesses, we still needed to organize our space in order to make it possible to store, and later find, all of our things and, at the same time, have room to park our vehicles. Once we found a place for everything in the house, we moved on to the task of organizing the garage. This involved filling the ...

Mary and Sean's Adventures Abroad

Tuesday, November 30, 2010. While this blog has been quiet lately, we're still on the island exploring and having fun. In fact, we're ramping up efforts to be as active as possible as the countdown to departure begins. We're down to about 6 months and time seems to speed up every day. Driving through there one day, I saw the name Rat and Sheep. So you know I had to check it out. We ordered lamb and chicken with anchovy paste, both which were delicious, and we even bought their homemade bread to take home.
