Fr Ray Blake's Blog

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Friday, March 30, 2018. The Cross is a Choice for Heaven or Hell. The Cross is about the vulnerability of God, it is about God placing himself into our hands. In the Crucifixion God is scourged, spat upon, crowned with thorns, nailed to the Cross and left to die. Before us is set the incredible power of man, he can and does crush God, remove from existence, expel him from the earth he had created. On the Cross God shows himself powerless but we are never powerless, God removes his ch...

Fr Ray Blake's Blog: Dominic, an alternative to Francis

http://marymagdalen.blogspot.com/2015/08/dominic-alternative-to-francis.html

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Saturday, August 08, 2015. Dominic, an alternative to Francis. Happy St Dominic's Day! I can't help comparing and contrasting the two great 13th Century founders. Why did Dominic not become a Franciscan or Francis a Dominican? I wonder if the next Pope in deference to his predecessor might choose the name Dominic. I love the fact that in our (Dominican) litany we have three Holy Fathers: Augustine, whose rule we live under, Francis, whose sons we love even if we quarrel now and again...

Fr Ray Blake's Blog: Fruit

http://marymagdalen.blogspot.com/2015/08/fruit.html

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Friday, August 07, 2015. There is fruit on Papa Stronsay. Writes about a meeting of the English Benedictines that has just ended, they have been discussing their future. In many ways their discussion is emblematic of the rest of the church, they are the 'canary down the mine'. The health of contemplative religious is an indication of the health of the wider Church. But it is a means to an end, as the Church itself is, that end is union with God. Just another mad Catholic. Think of Je...

Fr Ray Blake's Blog: Gnosticism

http://marymagdalen.blogspot.com/2015/05/gnosticism.html

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Christianity is about reality, the terrible reality of the Cross. No-one can embrace the Cross and live with fantasy or as Pope Benedict might have described it 'untruth' or Relativism. I like the fact that Pope Francis seems to want Christians to live in the real world, though at times his reality seems to be confused and often incoherent. Not welcoming children, not being orientated to the transmission of life, as so much of our culture to is not so orientate...

Fr Ray Blake's Blog: Coercion

http://marymagdalen.blogspot.com/2011/08/coercion.html

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Sunday, August 07, 2011. I am fascinated by the paper of Dr Thomas Pink over at Rorate. And Dr Joe Shaw. Add to the discussion. What is legitimate coercion? Should we coerce the bad to do good? Should a parent insist his child goes to Mass? Obviously if child is seven but what about seventeen? Is it right that a class of children who are baptised should be forced to go Mass at school, rather than play football? Must a Catholic refuse to allow her twice "married" son to sleep with sec...

Fr Ray Blake's Blog: Ascension/Pentecost Novena

http://marymagdalen.blogspot.com/2015/05/ascensionpentecost-novena.html

Fr Ray Blake's Blog. Friday, May 15, 2015. Presume a rant here about the movement of Ascension Day to the nearest Sunday, fill in whatever you want. Both moves serve to lessen the centrality of Pentecost to the Christian Mystery. At times one wonders whether the 'great reformers' were either mad or drunk - methystos as opposed to amethysts of course. How can any time be called ordinary since Jesus is risen from the dead and the Holy Spirit has been poured out on us? Thank you for the prayer of invocation...

Antique Richborough: December 2014

http://mgredwins.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, 21 December 2014. After a rather unecumenical post, here is better news. The Service of Lessons and Carols today was led by an augmented choir; our own little group, together with singers from other churches, Anglican and Catholic. Shared lunch - a great time for meeting. Our Organist, Peter Cook, sported his plum jacket for the occasion - you can see him on the right responding to tricky musical questions over lunch. One of our visitors joined the washing-up brigade - he can certainly come again!

EFpastor retired: Pope's Palm Sunday Homily

http://efpastoremeritus2.blogspot.com/2014/04/popes-palm-sunday-homily.html

Catholic priest in good standing.so far. And that is how I wish to die. Wednesday, 16 April 2014. Pope's Palm Sunday Homily. In his Palm Sunday homily, Pope Francis urged the congregation to consider how their actions and attitudes reflected the various characters in the story of Jesus’ passion and death. 8220;We have heard the (Gospel reading of the) Passion of the Lord. Only, it does us good to ask a question: Who am I? Who am I before my Lord? Who am I before Jesus who enters festively into Jerusalem?

Catholic priest in good standing.so far. And that is how I wish to die. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Some reservations on at least one of the two New Saints. I am glad that so many seem to draw joy and pleasure from the fact that two former Popes are due to be canonised by Pope Francis possibly in presence Pope emeritus Benedict. His "failure" to attend to the recurring problems in the era of sexual abuse during his reign appears to cast serious doubts on whether or not he was heroic in virtue. An Honour and...
