Mary Ross's works on paper include photographs, silkscreens, monoprints and digital prints. Many of these are improvisational in nature. She often developed chance events and combinations of seemingly incompatible processes. She worked the image through several stages to reach the final result. Photocopies, watercolors, photographs, videotape and text provided her with source material.

Since 1978, Mary Ross has used both ballet and modern dance to provide source material and a sub-theme for her work. To convey the energy of dance, she used distortion and system "noise" from analog video processing equipment to create a sense of movement, texture and visual excitement. The image is stripped of any narrative except that supplied by the viewer’s imagination.
