Clare's Aber Antics. CILIP Wales Conference 2012. I was fortunate to be awarded a free student place at the CILIP Wales Conference. On 18 May (the second day of the two-day conference). This is my blog-friendly report of the day. The day began with a talk by Liz Jolly (Director of Library and Information Services at Teesside University. A nice part of Cardiff with government/museum/university buildings and parks. Does it have a name? The next session was a discussion with a star-studded panel. That he wa...

Library data, library systems: a conversation. Folks who work in library data (e.g., catalogers and metadata librarians) and folks who work in library systems (e.g., developers and system analysts) sometimes end up talking past each other. Sometimes, though, conversation happens. To set the scene: library discovery platforms aren't magic, and don't make library data problems go away. Listen to a library data munger:. The Observer or Seeing What You Mean. If you are new to my writing, my talks and work tends to resemble an entanglement of ideas. Sometimes it all comes together in the end and sometimes I know that I’ve just overwhelmed my audience. I’m trying to be better at reducing the sheer amount of information I give across in a single seating. So for this post, I’m going to tell you what I’m going to say briefly before I tell you what I’m going to say in a more meandering fashion. I have to admit that I struggled...

The Library Without a Map – Librarian of Things
https://librarian.aedileworks.com/2016/07/08/the-library-without-a-map
The Library Without a Map. Recently we’ve been spending much attention on the. Of these subject headings as we come to recognize those particular headings that are reductive and problematic. For example, undocumented students are denied their basic humanity when they are described as illegal aliens. And as most of you already know, the act of reforming this particular heading was seriously hindered by Republicans in the House of Representatives. A word after a word after a word is power. In essence, this...

Constructive Summer: Building the Unified Library Scene: All my friends
http://unifiedlibraryscene.blogspot.com/2015/04/all-my-friends.html
Constructive Summer: Building the Unified Library Scene. Tuesday, April 7, 2015. About how change is scary but that we're headed toward what I have fondly dubbed the post-MARC future and, well, we need to embrace it. Or, if not embrace it, at least show up for it. In those previous posts, I've written about how change is difficult, but we need to embrace the discomfort we feel in the midst of change and not let that stop us. I couldn't be your friend, even if I tried again. I really enjoyed this post.

Constructive Summer: Building the Unified Library Scene: April 2015

Constructive Summer: Building the Unified Library Scene. Thursday, April 30, 2015. That's how it should be? This week, though, what happened at acupuncture was this: what we found was an old issue that was possibly the cause of a bunch of other stuff. So we went to work on it. I did not get 20 minutes of meditative visualization. There was twenty minutes of pain and suffering. Incoherent moaning even. It just hurt. The whole time. A lot. Links to this post. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. I wanted to talk abo...
