Archive for the 'fitness' category. Sunday, 19 August 2012. At my heaviest in March 2008, I was 208 lbs, with a BMI of 27.4. By the criteria set forth by the World Health Organization’s CDC, I was considered overweight. And yet, during that heavy time in my life, no one commented on my weight or urged me to lose weight. Strangely, the only critical comments I’ve received happened. At a certain level, this is just common sense, but it’s nice to see it proven with data. Friday, 17 December 2010. So, natura...

Archive for the 'language' category. Thursday, 19 November 2009. A hip hop translation. I thought that it might be a good linguistic exercise to translate a particularly catchy hip hop track from back in the day. Anyone hazard to guess the song and artists behind it? Here’s a clue to get you started: It was nominated for a Grammy Award. I’ve deliberately excluded lyrical clues such as promotional utterances of record labels and nicknames. I have an aversion to material goods that do not “gleam̶...

Archive for the 'introspection' category. Friday, 16 April 2010. The futility of criticism. I’ve recently come to the realization that most criticism is ultimately futile, and for a variety of reasons:. You may face obstinacy. You risk looking like a stuck-up snoot. Say a friend or co-worker is cracking wise on topics generally considered to be scatological or prurient. What do you do? You may be wrong. You won’t be giving the person the benefit of the doubt. You may be overlooking cultural differences.

Archive for the 'Tanya' category. Sunday, 14 June 2015. Tanya’s a planet. Tanya grabbed onto the banister in the foyer and pretended that she was riding a horse on the carousel at Wheaton Regional Park. 8220;Tanya’s on the merry-go-round.”. A light bulb went off in her head as she equated the circular motion of the carousel’s horses with the elliptical orbits of the planets. 8220;Tanya’s a planet. Planets go around the sun.”. I then asked her, “What planet are you? Sunday, 27 October 2013. And putting al...

Archive for the 'food' category. Wednesday, 24 October 2012. This evening, I took Leo Babauta’s advice. And made myself a big-ass salad. I used the biggest serving bowl that Annie could find. You can’t really get the scale from the photos, but the pile of vegetables is about the size of a regulation-size basketball. It was a manly pile of salad and took me close to half an hour of non-stop eating to polish this thing off. Red-leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, Chinese broccoli, raw mushrooms, mushrooms. So tha...

Archive for the 'photography' category. Sunday, 27 October 2013. Before Tanya was born, Annie and I agreed that we wouldn’t be the kind of new parents who posted on social media every time their newborn did something cute or, say, had a particularly interesting bowel event. While we’ve had no trouble keeping that informal agreement, our enthusiasm for Tanya (and burgeoning media collection) needed a proper outlet. To that end, this site now hosts more baby photos. Thursday, 7 March 2013. I am in love.

Archive for the 'humor' category. Tuesday, 6 October 2015. Matt’s first law of aural exhibitionism. The propensity of a person to play back recorded sound in public and unsolicited (for instance, in a store, at the park, or while in the presence of a captive audience such as on the subway) is inversely proportional to the generally-accepted listenability of the music being played and the quality of both the source and the playback equipment. Or take your pick from The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. Some people ...

Munch Dallas Brundage, 2008-2015. July 2008: Munch on the day we brought him home. It is with immense sadness that Annie and I announce the death of our second rabbit, Munch Dallas Brundage. Munch was born circa May 2008 and died on Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2015. He is survived by his adopted brother, Sniff Bun-Bun Brundage. His human sister, Tanya. And his human parents. Munch was ever true to his name. Munch never liked to be held, but he loved to be petted. He was a very petable rabbit. When we fi...
