Queen of the Zoo. I wrote this story in December 2006 for the Columbus Dispatch as Colo, the world’s first captive-born gorilla, was about to turn 50 years old. Even then, she was the oldest-known gorilla in the world. Hard to believe she has just turned 60 years old. One of the things I loved most about doing this story was watching Tom Dodge make the amazing portrait of Colo that ran as dominant art on Page 1. Her head is tilted back, her chin juts into the air, her eyes are half-closed and looking down.

Reaction at the fairgrounds: ‘I think we’re at war’ | 4 North

https://matttullis.wordpress.com/2016/09/11/reaction-at-the-fairgrounds-i-think-were-at-war

Reaction at the fairgrounds: ‘I think we’re at war’. In Wooster, Ohio. This is the first story I wrote on Sept. 11, 2001. It ran in a special edition that the newspaper put out the same day as the attacks. I was at the Wayne County Fair working the subscription tent when what was happening finally started to dawn on everyone there. I ended up using the back of subscription forms to take notes. Eyes welled up. Anger poured out. Mike Brekenridge, program manager at WQKT, said people were stopping by the bo...

Rolling Wheels Estates | 4 North

https://matttullis.wordpress.com/2016/05/23/rolling-wheels-estates

That’s Rolling Wheels Estates, the trailer park I spent the most formative young years of my life, 1979 to 1985. It’s the place I had five birthdays, from five to ten. When I read that work, I thought, hey, that’s not as bad as I thought it was! Maybe I’ll post it on the blog! So much about the park hasn’t changed. There are trailers still in that park that were there thirty years ago. The sign out front is still the same. The old brick building back in the park that was a laundromat is still there too, ...

A couple pieces on school inequality worth checking out. Was written Yohuru Williams. 8220;This is really the crux of the problem. The Civil Rights Movement was about inclusivity, while those who appropriate its language to buttress corporate education reform do so largely in support of programs that promote exclusivity at the public’s expense.”. This rings especially true after I listened to the most recent episode. Reaction at the fairgrounds: ‘I think we’re at war’. In Wooster, Ohio. This is the f...

Breaking down Deadspin’s breakdown of SB Nation Longform’s Holtzclaw story | 4 North

https://matttullis.wordpress.com/2016/03/10/breaking-down-deadspins-breakdown-of-sb-nation-longforms-holtzclaw-story

Breaking down Deadspin’s breakdown of SB Nation Longform’s Holtzclaw story. For the last couple weeks, I’ve been watching the reaction to SB Nation Longform’s. Who Is Daniel Holtzclaw. Story I’ve read just about everything, I think, that has been published online about how the story came to be, and then the aftermath, which included SB Nation’s firing Longform editor Glenn Stout. And then Deadspin’s attempt to explain how the story happened. A poorly-reported piece that put the blame solely on Stout.

Cirque de la nuit. The inky journey of a modern day Troubador. Littered with cigarette butts. Reeking of whiskey and. Sensitive to the sunlight. Covered with bumps, bruises. And dry patches on your skin. Dirt caked and fuzzy headed. The constraints of who and what you should be. Will bring you to your knees. Society wants you to bow. To humble yourself in its shadow. And be #grateful for the #blessings. It bestows on you. The warm drippings from its high table. If you take it, you owe fealty. You are com...

Cirque de la nuit. The inky journey of a modern day Troubador. If I could make a wish for you. It would be a desperately simply one. I wish that you would. Maybe take part of it,. But leave the heart tender and soft. With the other part. I wish you would go out in the world. And not be meek and mild. Not turn your cameras eye on yourself. But face the world around you. Make something, feel something. About the things you see. The people you encounter. I wish you would take it. And give it to someone else.
