Abe Dougherty’s Story. 8220;I picked up an old McGrigor board yesterday in a vintage shop in Burringbah, north east NSW. The shop is run by a bloke named Ray Joslin, who had Barracuda Surfwear. He was thinking the board was shaped around 1978. I was wondering if you would have any idea on the history of it? Looks like fun to ride, keen to get it wet! Return to top of page.

McGrigors In Ponsonby Apartment. March 7, 2013. Brian McGrigor built his first kneeboard in 1961. It was an experimental board made out of a cut-down 10ft balsa board and he rode it on the inside break at the Bommy, Long Reef . Kneeboards or Foley board as they were also known were around 5 to 6ft long, 24 inches wide and 3 inches thick. The spoon design built at McGigor Surfboards in the factory in Harbord Road Brookvale in the early 70′ proved to be very popular with kneeboard enthusiasts.

McGrigors In Ponsonby Apartment. March 7, 2013. Growing up on the Northern beaches and always in the water as a kid, I first saw the new short boards (10’ long “pig” boards), both balsa and the new Coolite ones, being ridden at Collaroy Beach in 1960. They were so different from the 16’ plywood ones the surf clubbies rode, much wider, shorter and a lot lighter and so much more manoeverable. I had had some woodwork experience and decided to change the shape of the board myself and stripped all the fibregl...
