Beekeeping at Central Michigan University Biological Station, Beaver Island Michigan. Saturday, August 22, 2009. A look into the depths of the hive. We'd pull up each frame one by one and clean off and extra beeswax (called burr comb) so it would be easier for us to manipulate. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Wanna see some "ghost bees"? AWLS Outdoor Leadership Camp in Wyoming. Friday, August 21, 2009. The mamma moose and her calf. We stayed even further away from these two so she would not get defensive of her offspring. Even though female moose do not grow antlers, I was not going to see how lovely she could charge and trample me. As I said to the group, "I have seen the show When Animals Go Wild" and I do not want to be featured on it! There was an error in this gadget. Check out the Live Webcams of this area! Beekeeping at Central Michigan University Biological Station, Beaver Island Michigan. Saturday, August 22, 2009. Here are the ladies bringing back pollen for the larva. Honeybees will only visit on type of flower at a time and will return to the hive before switching to a different flower type. They are the only bees that do this! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). AWLS Outdoor Leadership Camp in Wyoming. Friday, August 21, 2009. On our other shooting day we rotated different stations to try out various guns. I was able to shoot a front-end muzzle loader like they used in the Civil War. I packed down the gun powder and added my ammunition. I learned very quickly that these were not as reliable when it misfired three times before I was able to shoot at my target. There was an error in this gadget. Beekeeping at Central Michigan University Biological Station, Beaver Island Michigan. Saturday, August 22, 2009. We are inspecting the hives on our first day and were assisted by our professor. After this we teamed up together and were on our own to clean off burrcomb, check out honey production, and help maintain the hives. I was on the team that discovered queenless hives twice and we introduced a frame of larva and by now they should be good to go for the rest of the season. On my Way to Africa!

Beekeeping at Central Michigan University Biological Station, Beaver Island Michigan. Saturday, August 22, 2009. And here is a 300 year-old birch tree! They also have apple trees all over the island that were planted by the mormons when they lived on the island. It was also a kingdom at one point- the only part of the US to be ruled by a self-proclaimed king. that is, until he was shot to death. Today "King's highway" (the only paved road) is named in his honor. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
