HOSPITAL OR HOME BIRTH. A midwife is a professionally trained primary care provider who cares for women during normal pregnancy, labour and birth and for both mother and baby for the first six weeks of the postpartum period. Midwives can order any blood work, tests and ultrasounds if needed and they can prescribe antibiotics and some other medications. They consult with other professional care providers within the community and occasional further afield. You do not need a referral from your family doctor.
