Michigan Hummingbird Guy: March 2014

http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 2, 2014. Winter is for writing reports. The record setting winter in southeastern Michigan has kept me indoors more than normal. The up side is that I've had more time to get reports from last year's activities finished. These include the 2013 Hummingbird Banding Report (download a PDF here. Adult male Rufous Hummingbird, banded in Westerville, OH. Also available is the Fall 2013 Banding Report from Lake St. Clair Metropark, Macomb Co., Michigan ( download a PDF here. I did manage to get ou...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: June 2015

http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Seabirding and interesting plants. On Friday, June 5. Southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina. Several miles out, we began encountering flying fish, and I tried my hand at photographing them, with a little success. This one is an Atlantic Patchwing. These thrush-sized birds with a wingspan similar to a small tern, have long legs with yellow webs between their toes, seem to dance over the surface of the water. The nesting areas of the more frequently encountered (at sea) white-necked...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: October 2014

http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Metro Beach banding report - October 16-25, 2014. Highlights of the 33 birds banded on Thursday October 16. Included the first Ruby-crowned Kinglet of the season. I would have expected many more of these by now, so this is rather late for the first report. Hatch-year male Ruby-crowned Kinglet. After hatch-year White-crowned Sparrow. After hatch-year female Rusty Blackbird. The bird was sexed as female based on its wing chord, not based on any plumage character. Interesting bird...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: Summer Hummingbirds and other things

http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-hummingbirds-and-other-things.html

Friday, July 17, 2015. Summer Hummingbirds and other things. Hatch-year female Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Summer is also the season of bugs (insects), but it has been surprising so far how few mosquitos and deer flies there have been, considering how wet and rainy it has been. Perhaps the cool conditions (we have not had a 90 degree day yet) have been keeping their numbers down? And finally, an interesting beetle was presented to me at a home where I was banding hummingbirds. It was a species I was n...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: March Madness - Searching for Spring - Part 4

http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2015/04/march-madness-searching-for-spring-part_17.html

Friday, April 17, 2015. March Madness - Searching for Spring - Part 4. It was singing some very short phrases, sounding more like a vireo than a warbler. But once found it was fairly cooperative for photos. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. From there we headed north to Corpus Christi, and saw the first gulls and terns of the trip. Unlike those we saw in Florida in January, they were in nice breeding plumage now. And after more ...

Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: May 2015

http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Recap of birding "The Biggest Week". I am working n a couple of new posts about the Biggest Week in American Birding. One will be about what I call "senior birding". My hips just do not like hiking and standing as much as they used to and the event and area offer so many things that do not require extensive effort. Another will be showcasing photos I have not shared previously. "Stay tuned". In MY mind it is all the same book! I am an addict! Then just use the b...

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Biggest Week: Pearson Metropark and a ramble on Kenn's Coverts. I am going to start with a "ramble". The rest of the subject will be addressed shortly . This was our last day for attending The Biggest Week in American Birding. Anyway, I decided then that I would not push it as far on the next day, and just head home for the two hour drive in the morning. It was a good decision - but, damn! It not only taught me about birds, but it also taught me about how I learn!

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Friday, May 30, 2014. BWIAB - A highlight. Banding demo at BSBO. I am finally getting around to posting memories from The Biggest Week in American Birding. We always take home SO many memories and photographs from BWIAB, it is almost overwhelming to try to write about them! To see all of the scheduled happenings. But sometimes it is just serendipity that establishes permanent unexpected memories. Off to one side of the parking lot by the Optics Alley tent, there was a woman presenting...

Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! I FEEL IT!

http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/biggest-week-in-american-birding.html

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! Caveat: Anyone who knows me also knows I tend to "ramble"! And here I give insight into my past as well as how my new overwhelming fascination of things that tend to fly rather than submerge. Hey! Birds are just things from the skies rather than things from the depths, but it is all similar! And, birding is much more easily accessible! Yeah It is a long one, but cheaper than buying a new book!

Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding

http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/playing-states-and-plates-at-biggest.html

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding. Let's play "States and Plates" for the birds! This is a fun game for kids! And anyone who birds will know it is also a great - and much easier - game for adults. It is sure much easier to spot and record license plates than trying to spot warblers flitting in trees or lurking in the underbrush on the forest floor! Judy and I started going to the Biggest Week in American Birding. I remember that o...

Virginia Big Year 2016: March 2012

http://michiganbirder.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Virginia Big Year 2016. Thursday, March 29, 2012. This morning I decided to head out to Shenandoah River State Park in the hopes of finding a drumming Ruffed Grouse. While this search was unsuccessful I still had a very good morning. There was a flock of Golden-crowned and singing Ruby-crowned Kinglets at the picnic area and I saw this Louisiana Waterthrush along a nearby creek. As I was walking along the Cottonwood Trail I was surprised to see this Black Rat Snake coming out of a hole in a juniper!

http://michiganbirder.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Virginia Big Year 2016. Friday, May 17, 2013. Birding the Point Pelee Area. This morning Karl Overman and I crossed the border into Ontario to bird Point Pelee National Park and the surrounding area. Today was not one of the best days for Pelee but we still managed 20 species of warblers including these three. The biggest surprise at the park was a flyby Surf Scoter Karl spotted coming in near West Beach. Black-billed Cuckoo and Mourning Warbler were the other highlights but were heard only. My brother h...

http://michiganbirder.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Virginia Big Year 2016. Wednesday, February 22, 2012. This Merlin was also a surprise. I cant believe what a great February I have had for birds! Normally I see very little this time of year. Two first state records in less than a week is incredible! Saturday, February 18, 2012. Virginia's Warbler in MD! It quickly flitted from bush to bush for the next fifteen or so minutes before disappearing. I was not able to get any photos but Rob Ostrowski has generously allowed me to use one of his. As I was drivi...
