The bells where there had been discord. The smiles where there had been sadness. The hope that this story of Christ brings to uncertain hearts. They make this the happiest season of my life. Sure, I could write a sermon about keeping the Christmas spirit all year long. Many already have. It was a good week. I was with friends, and I heard a choir sing beautifully. I talked to God. I’m not supposed to be empty and lonely. The story shouldn’t include darkness. The right kind of essay would say that all is well. I busy myself so the loneliness doesn’t invade the world I’ve built. But when I stop working, I discover, to my terror, that it’s too late. The music that is supposed to bring comfort is a Trojan horse from which the loneliness charges directly into my heart. February 23, 2014.
