Extreme Enginerding

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Friday, August 7, 2015. Fortune Favours the Old. I had my birthday recently and, much like last year. Got a joke present from a friend. This year though, it came with an explicit challenge to do something statistical with it. So for this blog post, my subject matter will be based on this box of fortune cookies:. So what stats can be pulled out of a box of fortune cookies? Of course, most fortunes just floated around without cookies. Here's what the distrib...

Extreme Enginerding: City Council Analysis

http://www.mikerobe007.ca/2015/06/city-council-analysis.html

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Thursday, June 25, 2015. Back after the 2013 Edmonton municipal election, I did a quick analysis to see if I could predict who some of the new mayor Don Iveson's friends on council. It's now been a decent enough time since the last election that I've decided to check if my guess was accurate or not. Let's take a look! Edmonton's Open Data has a log of the voting record for the 2013-2017 council. Click to zoom and enhance). One way we can check out my previ...

Extreme Enginerding: Women's Inequality in Canada

http://www.mikerobe007.ca/2014/10/womens-inequality-in-canada.html

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Friday, October 31, 2014. Women's Inequality in Canada. About 5 months ago the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives released a report that compared the " best and worst place to be a woman in Canada. I wasn't a huge fan. Just recently, the World Economic Forum released its very own report. On worldwide gender inequality, and I liked it much. These stats were so well prepared and presented, in fact, that I figured Canadian cities deserved the same treatm...

Extreme Enginerding: 2012 Alberta Election Results Poll by Poll

http://www.mikerobe007.ca/2015/04/2012-alberta-election-results-poll-by.html

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Tuesday, April 28, 2015. 2012 Alberta Election Results Poll by Poll. There's only one week left until the provincial election! I figure this as good a time as any to remind everyone of the full results from 2012. I'm going to do it a little differently than most map sources have. As an example, Wikipedia has this map of election results for each of the 87 electoral districts in Alberta:. You know what's more interesting than that though? The results genera...

Extreme Enginerding: Canadian Cities Most and Least Likely to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse

http://www.mikerobe007.ca/2014/04/canadian-cities-most-and-least-likely.html

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Monday, April 7, 2014. Canadian Cities Most and Least Likely to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse. Last week I found this blog post. Which ranks the US states based on how likely they are to survive a zombie apocalypse. As the post mentions, seeing as the zombie apocalypse is clearly unavoidable, it's important to plan ahead and learn where to be when it hits. Distance to Closest Military Base. I'm not an expert, but I imagine if you're dead and frozen solid, ...

Extreme Enginerding: Just your friendly neighborhood stats!

http://www.mikerobe007.ca/2014/01/just-your-friendly-neighborhood-stats.html

Science, politics, and general geekiness, oh my! Thursday, January 16, 2014. Just your friendly neighborhood stats! The city of Edmonton is very statistician-friendly. As well as having the marvelous open-data catalogue. They also have detailed data sheets on every single one of Edmonton's neighborhoods. 2 Property Assessment Value. 3 Road and Sidewalk Conditions. Admittedly, I have no idea what scale is used to measure road and sidewalk conditions. It seems to peak at around 20, and my guess is that...

By Mack D. Male. May 12, 2015 at 10:35pm. On Saturday night at La Cité francophone the 2014 Edmonton New Media Awards, better known as the Yeggies. Were handed out. The Mike Robbins blog

The Mike Robbins blog. Travel, science, books. Whatever I feel like, really. Friday, 3 July 2015. Magic, or realism? Do you ever suspect that people write magical realism because it’s easier than realism? Plot a bit stuck? Stick in a flying pig. Character doesn’t quite work? Convert them into an angel). But now and then it just works. Some thoughts – and two recent books for the MR enthusiast. Was probably the book that “launched” magical realism for most Anglophone readers. García Márquez: magical hat?

Comms Corner | Mike Robb's blog on everything PR, corporate communications and social media

Mike Robb's blog on everything PR, corporate communications and social media. Is the culture of breaking news destroying genuine analysis in the mainstream media? I chaired a roundtable discussion at Cicero Group. This week with Henry Mance, Media Correspondent at the Financial Times. And one of the big questions around the table was how media outlets can remain relevant to their core readership in a landscape which has seen such a rapid transformation in recent years. In a media landscape of intense com...

My New Website mikerobergeartiste.com

Greetings In the beginning, a visual artist I was, common sense I had none, money. Was a foreign substance, but balls I had. Documentation was something I and many others in the 70's did not take seriously-. You stopped a performance to take a few. Shots of the site, then went back to. Performing, never taking shots of the action itself, then stored the negatives in an old. Where they either disintegrated, collected dust and grime, or were lost and forgotten. And often, no shots were taken at all.
