Brief spells of sunshine this morning, I noticed that one of the voles, wasn't a vole but a wood mouse under the feeders too. Huge ears! Dunnocks can be so mouse-like as they skulk about under the feeders. Also a late (and one of the few I've seen this year) Red Admirals found one of the few flowers still in bloom. I saw a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly today too.

Got up as early as possible today(5.30), to go and see the reported pair of migrating Dotterel. On top of Pendle hill. I hoped that the mist would burn-off after sunrise but it didnt. The summit was shrouded in mist leaving me with 10 yard visibility. Took me a while to find the Dotterel. Tuesday, 4 May 2010.

Found a dead Tawny owl (unringed) next to the road at the Eagle at Barrow pub. Hopefully not one of "my" birds. My summer tawny owl roost is only 500m from here. I still havent managed to get the owls to use my nestboxes. The pair usually turn up at the summer roost at the end of April. I'll find out if this was one of the pair then. Ashleigh - Jay (many), kestrel, redwing ( c10 over south), 2 owls, 1 peacock b/fly, many 7 spot ladybirds. Avondale - nuthatch, coal tit (min 4), great tit 2, robin, dunnock, sparrows. I didn't expect to further my 2010 list on a pissup weekend in Glasgow. but I did. My hotel was right on the Clyde. I saw my first meadow pipit. 78) of the year on a building site in the city centre. After a night out at the Stand comedy club, we dawdled along the river to the nearest weatherspoons for hangover brekkie. Spotted 4 female goldeneye. Where have they all been?

Pretty deep snow up on the hill even though theres been a bit of a thaw down in the valley. Heres a couple of shots of my hiking poles, before and after. The 2nd joint on my poles shows the snow to be about 14 inches deep, on the path, some of the drifts were about 3 feet deep! A few humans had been up here too. Were heard constantly but never seen.

With ill-fated timing, Mike Watson discovered the Calgary blues institution the King Eddy while it was on it’s last legs. Fortunately Mike was able to spend those last few years of the Eddy’s life seeking out new sounds and discovering his true feelings towards the blues.
