The School

The Home of the Penalty Kick. The village was RG's domain, the villagers were his clan and he was their chief. He built a school in 1860 to educate their children and as more and more jobs became readily available, homes were built to match the rising prosperity of a model village. A corner shop was added, which had the name McCrum above the door. His parting gift to his people was the RG Mc Crum Institute, a modern recreational centre that cost 3000 to erect at the start of the 20th century.

Like Milford House, the Gate Lodge was built and designed by Robert G McCrum in 1880. It was home to Mr and Mrs Blackstock in the 1920s and 1930s before being occupied by Bob and Lizzy McKane. After Bob died the property was left unoccupied. However, when Milford House was bought by the Northern Ireland Hospital Authorities and it became Manor House Special Care Hospital, the front avenue and Gate Lodge was no longer used. The Dunlop family lived in the Gate Lodge from the 1980s until 2005.

In 1890, Mr. William McCrum, who owned Milford House after his father’s death, gave football the penalty kick rule, arguably world sports’ most dramatic rule. McCrum’s idea for penalising foul play around goalmouths rocked the Victorian establishment that ran football. The English FA regarded it as a contradiction in terms: "only gentlemen played soccer and gentlemen didn’t cheat" - while the press angrily condemned the Irishman’s motion as a death sentence for the game. This building was designed by R.G Mc Crum’s son William and built at a cost of 3,000. When it opened in 1914, it was a recreation centre for the people of Milford. It had a ballroom larger than that of Armagh City Hall. It had a cinema, ladies and gentlemen’s gymnasiums, a public Library and tea rooms. There is a caretaker’s house at the back.

History of the School House. In September 2011 the Old School House celebrated 150 years since its opening in 1861. It is a grade 2 listed building and is of significant historical importance to the village and the community. There have been many changes made to the building over the past 150 years. Pavilion

The Pavilion is located within the grounds of Milford House. It was constructed as a Tennis Pavilion in 1880-1899. It was also known to have been used as a summer house and a scout hut. In the time of the Manor House School the front room was used as a classroom and the back room was known as 'The Den'. Future of the Manor House. If successful, the site will have a number of suitable dwellings and a care home. The Manor House would therefore be restored as the central Hub of the village. Milford House designed and built by Robert Garmany Mc Crum. The first house to have hydroelectricity, it was the most technically advanced in 19th century Ireland. It was built with six bathrooms, three walled gardens, seven glass houses and even had a waterfall in the dining room! Architecturally unique, it was built with 90% mass concrete and is the only known house in Europe to have plasterwork designed by Rudolph Steiner. Mr. McCrum sadly passed away in 1915.
