The Miller City Farm: Bee Update
http://millercityfarm.blogspot.com/2012/07/bee-update.html
The Miller City Farm. Wednesday, July 25, 2012. A typical summer afternoon at the hive. The new queen seems to be laying well, so worker numbers are going back up. This time of year they're working hard trying to store up enough sugar and protein (honey and pollen) to live off of for the winter. Um, yeah.so when can your family get their hands on some honey? It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. Friday photos: thanksgiving edition. We spent Thanksgiving at my mom's house, as we do every year. Only one of my sisters was able to come, and we had a slightly shorter vacation than usual, due to both of my sons having school on Wednesday, but despite those things we still had a fun long weekend. I am in love with this carousel. The animals are all animals native to New York State, and...

The Miller City Farm: Potato Patch
http://millercityfarm.blogspot.com/2012/09/potato-patch.html
The Miller City Farm. Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Yo, yo, yo. POTATO! Holler if you can hear me you Spuds! This week was potato harvest time. Fortunately I had Maddy digging with me. She's a pro:. The result was a lot of potatoes, a pretty epic haul in my opinion. After finishing digging Madeleine had to recruit her friend Audrey to help with collecting and sorting. Here's Audrey with her cut of the take:. Potatoes, she does not enjoy eating. Here are the production totals, by type:. Little Homestead ...

The Miller City Farm: May 2012
http://millercityfarm.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
The Miller City Farm. Thursday, May 17, 2012. This seems like it'd be a good post for pictures, but I wasn't home when disaster hit. Well there is a little stored honey and pollen and they left a few workers behind to tend the incubating larval brood. The workers are trying to raise a few of these larvae to be a new queen, which supposedly has an 80% chance of success. Either way this will be a "rebuilding year" for the bees, and a year without a big honey flow for us. Saturday, May 12, 2012.

The Miller City Farm: Extinction
http://millercityfarm.blogspot.com/2012/11/extinction.html
The Miller City Farm. Tuesday, October 30, 2012. This week was the end of the backyard colony. Battered by soaking rains, then raided by yellowjackets, they were down to their last 10 bees. Seen here is the queen and her remaining crew of workers, before they were run out of the hive in the next wave of yellowjacket attacks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). It's a Jungle in Here: 2012

It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. I'm not the resolution type (because I'm terrible at following through and finishing what I start! I'm hoping to go into more details in some future posts, but I'll touch on some of the biggest events of the last year. We took the kids on a weekend vacation to an indoor water park; the kids went white-water rafting for the first time; and Greg and I went to a concert for the first time in ye...

It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. Evan had his first day of preschool this morning. It was a strange feeling, dropping him off and getting back into the car with Greg beside me and an empty back seat behind us. James started nursery school for the first time when he was younger than Evan is now, yet Evan still seems so small. Our little baby, all grown up, with his new big-kid backpack and everything. Sniff. We spent some ti...

It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. I'm a month late with your birthday letter, but surely after eight years of living with me and your dad, you've learned that punctuality is not something we're known for, nor does it run in the family, so I know you'll forgive me. I know this, too, because you're a forgiving sort of person, quick to move on, never holding a grudge. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Adventur...

http://mergenthalerschmidt.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. A letter to my brother-in-law. I only got to know you for nine years, which was not nearly long enough. And if nine years can produce so much grief, how much worse must it be for those who knew you and loved you for decades, for your whole life? And there were so many who loved you - who wouldn't love you? How do you say goodbye to someone you didn't even know was going to be leaving? The Ad...
