When it rains, it pours | mini gardeners
https://minigardeners.wordpress.com/2014/07/30/when-it-rains-it-pours
Inspiring gardening projects for children. When it rains, it pours. July 30, 2014. I tried to convince my daughters we were having snake for dinner last night but they rolled their eyes and groaned “not courgettes AGAIN”. All this despite growing only a modest two plants this year. There’s only one thing for it, time to search for a recipe for chocolate courgette cake. Let’s hope it calls for more than one courgette. Categories: grow your own. Grow your own courgettes. July 30, 2014 at 7:55 pm. I’m intri...
Diary of a Guerrilla Gardener | mini gardeners
https://minigardeners.wordpress.com/2014/07/23/diary-of-a-guerrilla-gardener-3
Inspiring gardening projects for children. Diary of a Guerrilla Gardener. July 23, 2014. Inspired by all the reports of community gardening around London, we have the urge to “green up” some neglected land. After a quick street survey, we decide to start with the tree pit outside our house. We add a bit of compost in a vain attempt to try and improve the soil, plant the geraniums and water copiously. We top with a bit of bark as a mulch and a sprinkle of wildflower seed balls. A week later we notice a la...

Inspiring gardening projects for children. Summer holidays and a trip down memory lane. July 15, 2014. Day 3 of the school summer holidays and I’ve already had the urge to retreat to a darkened room and sob quietly. But you’ll be pleased to hear that I managed to pull myself together and we spent the afternoon doing something much more constructive; making garden notebooks. And finally, my favourite letter from our trip down memory lane was from my eldest daughter and it went along the lines of: “. You a...

Quite Gifted: January 2013
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 28 January 2013. The pros and cons of sowing early. As I said in my last post, I've not sown this early before so I knew there was a chance that things would not go according to plan. The fact is seeds need warmth and light to germinate, two things January is not renowned for. The other day, after a major dumpage of snow, it just seemed bizarre to look at the seeds snug in their propagators with a backdrop of freezing temperatures and snow. So far they seems happy enough. And finally, our cat Im...
Quite Gifted: Elusive snails
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013/06/elusive-snails.html
Wednesday, 26 June 2013. I know they are around. I've seen the signs, trails over my squash, courgettes and aubergine. I've lifted, turned, poked prodded and furtled but I cannot find the little blighters. I will find them, yes I will! Elsewhere in the garden. The asparagus peas have finally begun to flower. . The strawberries are ripening at a rate of about 2 a day at the moment. Hope to see you there. I came across your Wordpress blog yesterday and wondered what was going on. Now I know! I had a slow ...
Quite Gifted: Champagne bubbles
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013/06/champagne-bubbles.html
Wednesday, 19 June 2013. It was a lovely surprise this morning to find the first of the poppies "champagne bubbles" had quite literally "popped" open. The casing that held the poppy bloom. I have to admit, I was obviously very ignorant as to how the poppy would open. Still a little bit in awe of the whole process. I have tried sowing several batches of basil with no success what so ever. I've never been a fan of basil before I came across a great pesto recipe which the kids love. And then on the 16th June.
Quite Gifted: Falling in love with flowers
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013/06/falling-in-love-with-flowers.html
Saturday, 22 June 2013. Falling in love with flowers. Last year, my gardening motto at the start of the season was very much. If I can't eat I don't want it. We all make mistakes. Over the growing season, it was great to have so much green but I missed colour. I did have huge success with cosmos, rudbeckia goldstrum and a daisy type perennial but the overwhelming colour in the garden was green. This year, flowers no longer rate second billing but are starring side by side with the edibles, mostly. Im gla...
Quite Gifted: When animals attack!
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013/06/when-animals-attack.html
Monday, 10 June 2013. Having been laid low with a cold, I've been grateful that there hasn't really been an awful lot to do in the garden besides watering and placing the odd plant in its final position. 65279;I have been keeping an obsessively close eye on the jostaberry plant. Last year it was ravaged by sawflies that stripped it bear so when I found a leaf completely stripped, early last week, and 6 caterpillars happily chomping away I was immediately on red alert. It is never boring. I like the cat p...
Quite Gifted: May 2013
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 29 May 2013. Seat of the pants gardening. Having planted out 10 tomato plants before the weekend, I was away at the weekend and unsure what I was going to come back to. I hoped I had hardened everything off enough for them to survive whatever the weather was going to throw at them. Thankfully the weather was great and everything was as it should be when I came back Sunday night. The weather is so up and down, it really is hard to know whether the decision you make are the right ones. I was ver...
Quite Gifted: November 2012
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 12 November 2012. Just getting on with it! It's been a while. I know. I'm sorry. It's that time of year, not a lot happening in the garden and not alot to blog about. To be honest, stuff needed to happen in the garden but I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm necessary to do what needed doing. Yesterday was a lovely day, the kind of day that would be criminal to spend inside. This was the aftermath. The purple sprouting broccoli at the back are coming on and the cavolo nero are maturing. I also s...
Quite Gifted: July 2012

Monday, 30 July 2012. Garlic, cleaned up. Just a quick post today. Pulled up the last two garlics which were planted at Christmas, they are now drying out in the grow house. Finally got around to cleaning up the garlic I picked a few weeks ago. They may not be the biggest bulbs but to me they look great. We get through garlic at an alarming pace in our house so they won't be around for long! Friday, 27 July 2012. Better late than never. It looks like this sunshine has spurred things into life. Back to th...
Quite Gifted: June 2012
http://quitegifted.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Monday, 25 June 2012. I, quite frankly, rarely think of a relevant title for my posts but I have realised that most of my posts seem to happen on a Monday probably because it coincides with Dave going off to play football. So today's post gets a title, ok a bit of an unimaginative one but it's something I may work on. I was saying to another blogger (Niamh at http:/ vegplots.blogspot.co.uk/. Elsewhere in the garden. I had a really good sort out of the grow houses, one of which is really more of a store h...

mini gardeners | a blog about gardening with children
A blog about gardening with children. April 21, 2015. Chocolate buttons and growing wisteria from seed. Dark, milk or white chocolate? If I had to choose one it would probably be dark chocolate, although I do have a real weakness for milk chocolate buttons. The seeds remained in the school shed over the winter and I’d forgotten about them until I stumbled across them just before the Easter holidays. I brought them home thinking I’d attempt to grow some of them, as I had a suspicion they m...I know that i...
