Monday, March 30, 2015. Ele Willoughby (c) 2015, 11" x 14" (27.9 cm x 35.6 cm). This hand-printed linocut of the. Is the only known animal to be able to revert to its younger colonial stage after having reached maturity - that is the full-grown T. dohrnii. Jellyfish medusa, if it gets stressed, or old and sick, can revert back to the polyp stage, form a new polyp colony and start all over. So in theory, the jellyfish can bypass death. Can, in theory, repeat ad infinitum. For another, I was glad to read t...

Tuesday, June 23, 2015. My brother's koi tattoo inspired by my linocut. My brother got my koi linocut tattooed on his arm! He has several tattoos. The only other print inspired one is 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai, so I'm in good company. I always think it's a great compliment. I like how the tattoo artist has reinterpreted he image to suit the medium. My mother will not be happy with either of us, but he's a grown up and I'm flattered. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. A known greenhouse gas (which t...

Today I got to meet-up with a group of scientists/artists: Hayley Gillespie (ecologist, artist and founder of Art.Science.Gallery. Peggy Muddles (aka the Vexed Muddler. And have a tour behind the scenes at the Royal Ontario Museum! I know what that means! I was pleased to happen to see a giraffe weevil. Along with a fabulous, large bronze sculptu...

magpie & whiskeyjack: Florence Nightingale; Nursing, Statistics and Data Visualization Pioneer
http://magpieandwhiskeyjack.blogspot.com/2015/05/florence-nightingale-nursing-statistics.html
Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Florence Nightingale; Nursing, Statistics and Data Visualization Pioneer. 2nd edition linocut on kozo, Ele Willoughby, 2014. Being a nurse. However, I was (luckily) commissioned to make a portrait of Florence Nightingale. The more I read, the more interesting she became to me. In that house of misery. A lady with a lamp I see. Pass through the glimmering gloom,. And flit from room to room. Which protested the over-feminisation of women into near helplessness. She helped abolish...

Wednesday, August 6, 2014. This is a very simple post, but I really must share this great little animation. I am after all, a geophysicist by training, and this elegant animation “Everything You Need to Know About Planet Earth”. By Munich-based Kurzgesagt,. Covers much of a first year physics of the Earth course in a lucid, fun, succinct way, with a great minimalist aesthetic, and a few extra dinosaurs. Art about earth science. Monday, August 4, 2014. I love this hilarious example by Tenso Graphics.

Cross-posted to the minouette blog.

Sunday, May 31, 2015. Chien-Shung Wu and the Violation of Parity. Madame Wu and the Violation of Parity. 2nd ed. linocut, 2012, Ele Willoughby. Happy birthday to Mme. Wu! Madame Wu showed that a "Law" of physics did not hold! This result was staggering and shocked the physics world. Lee and Yang won the Nobel prize for their theoretical work. Many physicists thought Mme. Wu should have been included in this win. I'm trying to redress that. Labels: art about physics. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. And enhances ...

Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Physicist Arie van 't Riet. Specializes in radiation physics, and very low energy x-rays in particular. He began making artwork employing x-ray nature photographs, where radiography intersects fine art. His colourized x-ray photos of bioramas are a sort of see-through wunderkammer. He creates entire scenes in x-ray form. It makes me think of how the natural world might look if my eyes could see in x-ray wavelengths (or those back-of-the-comic-book x-ray specs really worked). The wh...
