Misidentifying Fungi: March 2016

http://misidentifyingfungi.blogspot.com/2016_03_01_archive.html

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Sunday, 20 March 2016. Small stream that runs along the southern edge of the plateau at Park Corner Heath, looking east towards the pond. It's fairly common knowledge among the volunteers involved in managing Butterfly Conservation's Park Corner Heath. As the Brimstone butterfly emerges from hibernation to patrol the woodland rides, looking for a mate, the Bog Beacon. Well, this loo...

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Monday, 4 April 2016. Something in the flowerbed. Something caught my eye as I walked up the garden path this evening. Something in this flowerbed:. This cup fungus has sprung up all along the length of the bed:. Outer surface, but forms a separate layer with a slightly smoother texture. It doesn't have much of a stem to speak of. To 8cm across; initially deep cup- or goldfish bowl-...

Misidentifying Fungi: Elastic Oysterling?

http://misidentifyingfungi.blogspot.com/2017/01/elastic-oysterling.html

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Monday, 9 January 2017. Was back in Rowland Wood yesterday so thought I'd grab a specimen of that Oysterling I found growing on pine brash last month. Here's where it was growing. Here's what it looks like. And here's my specimen. The key to the Panellus. Species in Funga Nordica. Takes you to two species with whitish or buff fruit bodies: P. stipticus. I've seen P. stipticus. I was...

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Wednesday, 22 June 2016. Now here's some mould I WANT to see on my lunch break: Slime mould! With all this warm, damp weather we're having, I couldn't resist popping over to Hoe Wood at lunchtime for a quick poke around. First up, a nice lunchtime treat: Dog's Vomit. Close by, a lone drop of Wolf's Milk. This next one's a new one for me: Mustard-yellow sporangia on a darker stalk.

Misidentifying Fungi: Horton Wood on a dry December day

http://misidentifyingfungi.blogspot.com/2016/12/horton-wood-on-dry-december-day.html

I don't know much about Fungi. What I do know is, they're mostly pretty hard to identify to species. So this is me, trying. Saturday, 3 December 2016. Horton Wood on a dry December day. Quick stroll to Horton Wood this morning. Wasn't expecting much in the way of fungi, as I gather the season starts winding down at this time of year. But there were a few things about. I took a specimen of the mushroom in the foreground of the second picture. Here's the cap up close:. Cap dry and mousy brown. Yellow-brown...

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Friday, 27 January 2017. I have seen numerous variations over the years and here is a selection of photographs. Although the occurrence of some variants can be manipulated through captive breeding, the following examples were found and photographed in the wild. This pale form only occurs in the female of the species and can account for 10% of females. A regular form which displays a line of blue submarginal spots on the hindwings.

East Sussex Wanderer: A Walk in the Wood

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-walk-in-wood.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Monday, 21 November 2016. A Walk in the Wood. Saturday morning was cold and bright and my intention was to spend a few hours coppicing and thinning in the wood. After an hour, the spark plug on the chainsaw failed and with no spare, I decided to pack the tools away for another day and enjoy a slow walkabout through the trees. This is a species of Puffball or Earthball; possibly a Scaly Earthball (. View my complete profile.

East Sussex Wanderer: April 2016

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Friday, 29 April 2016. The weather this week has continued in the same vein as last week with a persistent cool edge to the breeze adding a significant wind chill factor. This does appear to be depressing butterfly numbers at the moment but nature can only hold back for so long and eventually they must emerge in order to continue the life cycle for the next generation. Early Purple Orchid (. Saturday, 23 April 2016. On Wednesday...

East Sussex Wanderer: Purple Hairstreak

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2015/12/purple-hairstreak.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Tuesday, 1 December 2015. The Purple Hairstreak (. Is a little gem of a butterfly and well worth seeking out in mixed woodland containing plenty of oak, its only foodplant. Although a fairly common species in Sussex, it is largely a canopy dweller which makes it tricky to see at close quarters but with plenty of patient hours in the field and a knowledge of its life cycle and behaviour, you can see this beauty up close.

East Sussex Wanderer: Autumn's Bounty

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016/10/autumns-bounty.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Saturday, 29 October 2016. I love the seasonal changes that are a signature of natural Britain and Autumn has a beauty all of it's own. However, walking across Pevensey Levels yesterday in temperatures of 17 degrees under a clear blue sky and with just a gentle breeze, it felt like summer was trying to hold on for a while longer. We saw four freshly emerged Clouded Yellows on the wing. Shaggy Ink Cap (. View my complete profile.

November 8, 2014. I don’t really know how many days it’s been since I first started feeling bad again.
